Compaq and NEC introduced new desktop computers, while virtually every major manufacturer adopted a faster chip for laptop models as springtime revisions by personal computer makers hit a peak Monday.
Compaq, the leading PC maker, rolled out 35 new models aimed at businesses and government customers. It set the industry on edge Friday with a decision to lower profits to maintain faster sales growth than competitors.
Price cuts on existing models averaged about 15 percent. Compaq shaved its lowest-priced line for businesses, the ProLinea E, below comparable models of Hewlett-Packard Co., which has taken some of its business in recent months.
Late in the day, Digital Equipment Corp. responded to Compaq's move by cutting prices 6 percent to 26 percent on models it sells to businesses.
Meanwhile, NEC Corp. jumped into the low-price fray with a product series called the PowerMate V. The starting price, for models with Pentium 75 MHz microprocessors, is just below $1,300, excluding monitors.
