Coal production drops 2 percent

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production fell 2 percent to 21.2 million tons during the week ended Feb. 24 from 21.6 million tons the week before, the Department of Energy said Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 22.3 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration. Virginia mines produced 659,000 tons during the survey week, down from 684,000 tons a week earlier and 753,000 tons a year earlier.

Domestic coal production so far this year is 153 million tons, 6 percent behind last year's production at this time.

New Va. law school backed, is feasible

A feasibility study for a proposed new law school in far Southwest Virginia has turned up widespread regional support for the school and has found it to be financially feasible, the school's promoters say.

The proposed Appalachian School of Law would be situated in Norton, in the Virginia coalfields. It would specialize in training lawyers in alternative dispute resolution, the settling of disputes outside of court.
