The third time was the charm for Virginia Tech's Matt Reynolds on Tuesday in Blacksburg.
Reynolds was retired twice with the bases loaded in the first game against Howard (2-9), which the Hokies lost 2-1 in seven innings.
In the nightcap, Reynolds, a former William Byrd High School star, made amends by hitting a grand slam and leading Tech (3-2) to a 13-4 victory. Reynolds had three hits and five RBI in the second game.
The Hokies got solo home runs from freshman Chad Foutz (Franklin County) and senior David Fitt, and a two-run homer from senior Josh Herman (William Byrd) in the second game.
Steve Schulze pitched four scoreless innings to get the victory. He gave up two hits and struck out four.
Howard's victory in the first game was just the Bison's fifth in 60 games against Tech. Starting pitcher Darrell Scott (1-2) got the victory for Howard, giving up three hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings.
In other sports news:
* Cordell Farley was 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI as Virginia Commonwealth (9-8) dropped Radford 8-6 in a baseball game in Richmond. Chris Carr and Jim Thomas each had two hits for Radford (1-6).
* Four-run seventh innings were the order of the day during a college softball doubleheader between Radford and Liberty in Lynchburg. Radford (10-6) used a four-run seventh to win the opener 6-2, and Liberty (7-1) scored four in the bottom of the seventh in the second game to win 10-8. Melissa Pickel of Radford was 5-for-8 with nine RBI.
* David Dudley of Lynchburg is in 17th place after two days at the $475,000 BASS Master MegaBucks fishing tournament at Richards-Chambers Reservoir in Corsicana, Texas.
Dudley has a two-day limit of 10 fish weighing 24 pounds, 14 ounces. Fred Bland of Birmingham, Ala., leads the event with a two-day catch of 10 fish weighing 39 pounds.
