Earl was born to traveling circus performers in the rip-roaring Straight Creek mining section of Bell County, Ky., on May 11, 1905--the legendary haunts of Blind John Swift's elusive Silver Mine. He has dug coal from the puny 20-inch coal seams around Cumberland Gap, as has his loving wife, Evelyn, from the minuscule coal beds of Greenup County, Ky. He has commissioned a writer to write his biography; one whose travels through the Appalachian coal fields all but followed in his footsteps. He served eight consecutive two-year terms as Mayor of Cambria, Va. He was instrumental in merging Cambria with Christiansburg.
