The fifth annual Southwest Virginia Governor's School Science Consortium, with more than 90 student exhibits covering subjects from stress to drinking-water safety, will be held Friday and Saturday at New River Community College.

Twenty-four judges will rate the science projects from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Martin Hall. The consortium will be open to the public at 10 a.m. Saturday, with awards presentations starting at 10:45 a.m. in Room 141 of Godbey Hall.

The top award recipients from the regional fair will get an all-expense-paid trip with their exhibits to the 48th International Science and Engineering Fair in Tucson, Ariz., May 6 to 11.

The project categories cover behavioral sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, physics and zoology.

Participants include students from Pulaski, Giles, Floyd, Wythe, Bland, Carroll and Smyth counties and the city of Galax. Their diverse research projects range from Toxic Shock Syndrome to the effect of caffeine on rats and whether cats are right-pawed or left-pawed.
