Town Council has prohibited trains from blowing their whistles at the Chrisman Mill Lane crossing, but it remains to be seen how long the whistles will be quiet.
Council passed the resolution Tuesday at the request of residents of the neaby Diamond Point subdivision, where the whistles can be loud and can come at any hour.
But federal railroad regulations that are in the works could preempt Christiansburg's new rule, Town Manager John Lemley said. The regulations, which could be in effect by November, would require trains to blow their whistles at crossings to increase safety.
Also Tuesday, council rezoned about seven acres off of Quesenberry Street for multi-family residential use, at the request of Lowell Wade.
The town's spring cleanup will be April 8 through 19, corresponding to the countywide Broomin' and Bloomin' cleanup slated for April 20.
