TECH PITCHERS TOSS NO-HITTER VS. HOWARD

Virginia Tech pitchers Chris Frith, Jon Hand and Charlie Gillian combined on a no-hitter as the Hokies defeated Howard 5-2 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at English Field in Blacksburg.

The no-hitter was the second in less than a year for Tech and the fourth in Chuck Hartman's 17-plus seasons as Tech's coach. Brian Fitzgerald tossed a no-hitter for the Hokies against James Madison last April.

Frith (Martinsville) started Wednesday's game and worked 31/3 innings. The sophomore right-hander allowed a run on four walks in the first inning. He then retired seven consecutive batters before giving up another run in the fourth inning when he walked one batter, hit another and threw two wild pitches.

Hand relieved Frith in the fourth inning with one out and a man on third base. The sophomore retired 10 batters before two runners reached base on errors in both the seventh and eighth innings. Hand (1-1) worked 42/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win.

Gillian opened the ninth and struck out two before coaxing James Harris of Howard (2-10) to ground out the end the game. It was the second save for Gillian.

Austin Rappe had two hits and drove in two runs for the Hokies (4-2). Center fielder Kevin Barker smacked his fourth home run of the season.
