A Bedford County grand jury indicted a Florida man this week on charges that he pushed his elderly mother down and broke her hip.
Edward A. Willoughby Jr., 42, of North Fort Myers, Fla., will stand trial April 5 on one count of aggravated malicious wounding. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 20 years to life in prison and fined up to $100,000.
Willoughby was living with his mother at her house in Bedford County when the incident took place in July 1994, according to Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz.
Myrtle A. Willoughby, 76, told state police investigators in November that she and her son had an argument after she refused to sign her house over to him. She said her son pushed her down after she tried to leave the house, Krantz said.
Myrtle Willoughby, who had surgery to correct the broken hip, now must walk with a cane or walker, Krantz said.
