BAILEY, Dorothy Smith, 71, of R oanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 1996. Survivors include her husband, Napoleon Bailey Sr.; two sons, Napoleon Jr. (Zenobia) and Roger (Frankye) Bailey; two daughters, Joan (Wilmer) Sullivan and Janet (Terry Sr.) Hopson, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Victoria Ford, Mercer Co., W.Va. and Julia Calfee, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Laura Bailey, Roanoke, and Geraldine Smith, Mercer Co., W.Va.; one brother-in-law, William Grogan, Roanoke; ten grandchildren, Lenora Paige, Roger Bailey Jr., Tonya Brown, Petina Bailey, Napoleon Bailey III, Terry Hopson Jr., Dwayne Bailey, Robin Bailey, Tennille Hopson, and Adrian Brown; six great-grandchildren; two devoted friends, Venezuela Waller and Richard Taylor; other relatives and friends. COOK, Kenneth, 78, of Blacksburg, went to be with God Tuesday, March 5, 1996. Born in Mullins, W.Va. on May 10, 1917, he was the son of the late Harry Ribble and Laura Kanode Cook. He was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant with 25 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry S. Cook; and a grandson, Doug Alvey III. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth R. and Kitty Cook, Forestvine, Md., Tommy and Mary Ann Cook, Brandywine, Md., David and Doris Cook, Radford, and Greg and Rhonda Cook, Christiansburg; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Ella Mae and Phil Whitehurst, Christiansburg, Christine and Bill Webb, Blacksburg, Mary Jane Wilen, Alexandria, and Brenda Potvin, Hollywood, Fla..; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Andy Cook, Florida, and Ophus and Dorothy Cook, Vinton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lottie Walters, and Evelyn and Bill Davis, all of Blacksburg; two sisters-in-law, Lesie Cook and Mary Cook both of Blacksburg; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. HELMS, Nancy Staton, 82, of Thaxton, died Tuesday, March 5, 1996 in Camelot Hall, Salem. She was pre-deceased by her parents Zeph and Susie Tweedy Staton, and her husband, Rowe E. Helms. Nancy was a sweet and gentle soul who will be sadly missed by a son and daughter-in-law, Sonny and Jean Helms, T haxton; a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Jim Shrewsbury, Norwalk, Ohio; six grandchildren, Steve and Gary Shrewsbury, Teresa Carbary, Kim Daniel, all of Ohio, Phillip and David Helms, Vinton, also survive. Nancy also had nine great-grandchildren. The family will greet friends on Friday, March 8, 1996 from 1 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. There will be a graveside service at Basham Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Stewartsville, Saturday, March 9, 1996 at 11 a.m. with Elder W. Lane Carter officiating. HIRSH, Philip Reid, 84, of Warm Springs, died Tuesday, March 5, 1996 in Stuart, Fla. after a brief illness. He was born in Montclair, N.J. His father, Allan M. Hirsh, a graduate of Yale, 1901, was the author of ``Boola Boola'' and founder of the Lock Joint Pipe Co. Mr. Hirsh was a member of the class of 1935 at Yale. He joined the Lock Joint Pipe Co., eventually become Chairman of the Board, and subsequently CEO of the InterPace Corp. He was a former President of the American Waterworks Assoc., and American Concrete Pipe Assoc. He also was a former Commodore of the Anglers Club of Key Largo, Fla. After retirement, Mr. Hirsh developed several successful businesses, including the Waterwheel Restaurant and Meadow Lane Lodge Country Inn, both in Warm Springs. Mr. Hirsh devoted himself to historical preservation projects and preservation of undeveloped land through open air easements in Bath County. He was a founding member of the St. Michael's Maritime Museum in St. Michael's, Md. It was through his effort that the Hooper Straight Lighthouse was saved and moved to the Maritime Museum site. Mr. Hirsh is survived by his wife, Catherine; two brothers, Allan M. Hirsh of Paris, France, and Malcolm M. Hirsh of Sarasota, Fla.; as well as four children, Dr. Philip R. Hirsh Jr. of Lexington, Glenn S. Hirsh of Charlottesville, Stephanie Petit of Pauley's Island, S.C., and Peter G. Mennen of St. Helena, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Burial will be at the site of Fort Dinwiddie, an eighteenth century colonial fort on the family farm in Warm Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Bath County Historical Society, c/o Hugh Gwen, Warm Springs, Va. JAMES, Robert Frank, (``Bob''), 70, of 225 Locust Avenue, Dublin, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 1996 at his home. Born October 1, 1925 in Boone County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jessie James and Irene Stewart James. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris Sutphin James; and a brother, Jessie James Jr. He was retired from Hercules, Inc. with 30 years of service in Materials Management. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He was a member of the Radford V.F.W. Post #776, a member of the Moose Lodge #1470-Montgomery County, and a member of the Thornspring Golf Club, Pulaski. He was a member of the John's Creek Christian Church, New Castle. Surviving are his wife, Hattie Taylor James, Dublin; one daughter, Barbara Neal, Roanoke; one granddaughter, Lori James, Resida, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Sherry Hurst, Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepson, Tommy Marshall, Pulaski; father-in-law, Eugene T. Taylor, Pulaski; brothers, Horace (Vale) James, Portsmouth, Jack James, Portsmouth, Marion James, Portsmouth, Charles E. James, Portsmouth; four stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-granddaughter. JASPER, John B., 81, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 1996. He was born June 11, 1914, and was a graduate of Gary High School in Gary, W.Va. and Murray State University in Murray, Ky. Mr. Jasper served in World War II in the U.S. Navy and retired from U.S. Steel in 1969. He is survived by his wife, Mary Faith Paine Jasper; his sons and daughters-in-law, Gail and Pat Jasper, Buchan an, John Jr. and Anita Jasper, Idaho; his daughters and son-in-law, Jane and Barry Wise, W.Va., Kim Solonka, Oregon; eight grandchildren. MARTIN, Carl Phipps, 75, of the Maybrook Community near Pembroke, died Wednesday morning, March 6, 1996, in Giles Memorial Hospital in Pear isburg. Born in Newport on December 9, 1920, he was a son of the late John Will and Lillie Lafon Martin. Carl retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Watson Martin and Howard Martin, and three sisters, Otia Reynolds, Virgie Stiff and Hallie Carter. Surviving are his wife, Martha A. (``Betsy"") Kelly Martin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Gene and Donna Martin of Riner, and Jimmy and Janis Martin of Pembroke; one daughter, Judi Ann Martin of Blacksburg; one granddaughter, Jill Martin, and three grandsons, Johnny Martin, Michael Martin and Nathaniel Roop.
