BAILEY, Dorothy Smith, 71, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 1996. Funeral services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Freddie Carper will officiate, with the interment in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. CRAWFORD, Elma Bryant, 70, of Bassett, died Wednesday, March 6, 1996. Funeral Saturday 11 a.m., Collins Funeral Chapel, Bassett.

DUNCAN, William Joshua, 96, of Vinton, and formerly of Floyd County, passed away Thursday, March 7, 1996 at Friendship Manor Nursing Home. Mr. Duncan was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member and deacon of Indian Creek Primit ve Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Ellen Duncan; and a son, Morris Cleo Duncan. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Essie and Esmond Harris, Vinton, Ruby Gibson, Christiansburg, Ethelen and Cline Hollandsworth, Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Greta Bolling Duncan, Roanoke; sister, Ora Phillips, Willis; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. FERRIS, Ira Franklin, 70, of Salem, died Thursday, March 7, 1996, at Richfield Nursing Center. He was a World War II veteran. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Elbert and Lucille Ferris, McDowell, W.Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Kenneth Gibson, Salem; several faithful cousins, Darlene Gearhart, Twila Gearhart, both of Salem; other family members. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, at 10 a.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Ken Nienke officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. FIELDS, James Henry, Jr., 86, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, March 5, 1996, at John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell. Born in Rockbridge County on January 26, 1910, he was the son of the late John Henry and Lillie Gold Rendell Fields. He was a retired foreman from Modine Manufacturing Company and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He was a member of Imperial Council K.E.A.O.N.M.S. Inc. in Roanoke, and Constantine Masonic Temple #105 in Lynchburg. He is survived by his wife, Mary Dandridge Fields of Buena Vista; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Carvin and Judy Fields of Prince George; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Nikkoa Fields of Prince George, and a sister, Omega F. Morrison of Lexington. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Edward H. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Lexington. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lomax Funeral Home.

GILBERT, Waller Noel Jr. (Bruce), 77, of Martinsville, died Thursday, March 7, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Norris Funeral Home Chapel.

GUERRANT, Peter Moss, 83, of Callaway, died Thursday, March 7, 1996, at his residence. Mr. Guerrant was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church, where he had served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was a 54 year member of Isaac Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M., was a member of Rocky Mount Chapter #141 O.E.S. and was a charter member of the Callaway Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Jessie Renick Guerrant of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Joan Guerrant, Callaway; one daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Tommy Draper, Martinsville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, John L. Guerrant, Charlottesville, Richard F. Guerrant, Roanoke; two sisters, Polly Dodson, Charleston, W.Va., Helen Watsom, Red Springs, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Piedmont Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Slider officiating. Interment will follow in the Callaway Community Cemetery, with rites by Isaac Lodge #29, A.F. & A.M. HOLSINGER, Ralph Waldo, 69, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, March 6, 1996, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home, following a long illness. He was the son of Rufus W. and Sadie Anderson Holsinger. He attended Augusta Military Academy and the University of Vlrginia where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He and his father were both professional photographers in Charlottesville, expanding some 96 consectutive years and were recognized for outstanding achievements in the field. He was listed in Who's Who in Portrait Photography in America, Chairman of the State Board of Photographer Examiners, and President of the Virginia Professional Photographers Association; where his photos captured the rich, famous, and forgotten. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Elks. He is survived by his wife, Helen Holsinger; a son, Ralph W. Holsinger of Roanoke, two grandsons, Aric R. Holsinger of Baltimore, Md., and Gregory G. Holsinger of Virginia Beach. In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by three sisters, Ethel and Marian Holsinger and Mary Lois Hemler. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 1996, at the Monticello Memory Gardens, with the Reverend Harold Hallock officiating. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Teague Funeral Home, Charlottesville, Va. HUDDLE, James Edward, (``Jimmy''), 84, formerly of 339 N. Jefferson Ave., Pulaski, died Wednesday evening, March 6, 1996 in the Malin Health Care Center, Wytheville. Born in Wythe County September 27, 1911, he was the son of the late Robert Clayton Huddle and Maude Frances Cook Huddle. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Lilly Huddle. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy in World War II. He was a past exalted ruler of the Elks, being a member for over 50 years, and named Elk of the year for two years. He was an avid baseball fan, and rarely missed a game in over 60 years, and was called Mr. Baseball. He attended every World Series from 1952 until 1971. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frances H. Wampler, Wytheville; and several nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Terrie Sternberg officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visiting will be Friday at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m.

LEE, Raymond B. Jr., 61, of Troutville, passed away Monday, March 4, 1996. He was born June 19, 1934 and was a disabled veteran of the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Marines. He was a retired Postal Supervisor and U.S. Postal Accident Investigator. He was the best granddaddy in the world. He was a member of Y-Phlanx Honor Society and attended V.P.I. 1959-1961. He was a graduate of the U. S. Postal Management Academy. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherrye Diane Lee. He is survived by his wife, Lois T. Lee; daughters, Terrye L. Young, Anne B. Lee, Linde Raynee Lee and Dr. Said Chibane, son-in-law; grandsons, Bradley Jacob Young, Robert Lee Young, Zacharia Lee Chibane; granddaughter, Fairouz Lee Chibane; mother, Mrs. R. B. Lee Sr.; sisters, Mrs. Anne Stiff and brother-in-law, Russell Stiff, Betty Parks and brother-in-law, Dennis Parks; nephews, Greg Parks and wife, Sarah, Hunter Parks, Eric Stiff and wife, Tamara; niece, Leigh-Anne S. Razzaghi and husband, Kaveh; and many loyal faithful friends. A memorial service was held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 1996, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Kestner officiating. LOWE, Karen Louise 49, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and formerly of Salem, died Wednesday, March 6, 1996 at the home of her parents in Salem, Va. Teacher in North Hampton, N.C. and Halifax County Community College, twice awarded Teacher of the Year, selected to Who's Who among America's Teachers in 1990, twice selected as North Carolina Social Studies representative to the United States State Department in Washington D.C. Beloved daughter of Sam and Elsa Lowe; sister and sister-in-law of Alan and Jeanette Lowe, Michael and Judy Lowe and Carl and Sharon Lowe; also survived by niece, Sarah Lowe; nephew, Judson Lowe; her beloved Susie; uncles, James M. Lowe, Joseph L. Lowe and her aunt Frances Leathers; and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 1996 at 12:00 noon at the Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. MELTON, Emma Edwards, 84, of Rt. 2, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, March 6, 1996. She was born in Scott County, the daughter of the late Ben and Eliza Fields Edwards, and was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac F. Melton; two daughters; and two brothers. She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Harvey Webb of Lakewood, Ohio, Louise and Ken Terry, Susie and Robert Campbell, all of Vinton, Betty and Buster Parnell of Rt. 1, Austinville, Nancy and Jerry Collins of Barren Springs; four sisters, Eula Hart of Cowpens, S.C., Fern Hart of Roebuck, S.C., Nannie Mullins of Elizabethton, Tenn., Ruth Massengill of Chucky, Tenn.; three brothers, Isaac Edwards of Jonesville, Howard Edwards of Dryden, Cliva Lee Edwards of Duffield. Nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the Foster Falls United Methodist Church with the Rev. PARRISH, Alfred Leonard, Jr., 77, of Colonial Heights, Va., died on Wednesday, March 6, 1996, in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. A native of Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Alfred Leonard, Sr., and Maggie Wood Parrish, He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church, and a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Mr. Parrish was a partner in Parrish & Haynes Floor Covering and Tile of Roanoke, and was retired from the Colonial Heights City Schools Maintenance Department. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Vinton, Va., and the American Legion (Robert E. Lee Post). Survivors include his wife, Frances Poster Parrish, daughter, Ann P. Bums of Nashville, Tenn.; sons, A. Leonard Parrish III of Hampton, Va., and Robert K. Parrish of Nashville; stepdaughter, Joyce A. Foster of Colonial Heights, and stepson, James A. Foster, Jr., of Hagerstown, Md., six grandchildren, Kathryn and Jillian Burns of Nashville, Amanda, James, Michael, and David Foster of Yardley, Penn.; and sister, Shirley P. Knowles of Roanoke, Va. PATEL, Dahyabhai N. 78, of Roanoke, died Thursday, March 7, 1996. Mr. Patel is survived by his wife, Jasuben Patel, Roanoke; son, Bharat Patel, Roanoke; daughter, Indira Patel, Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; three brothers; one sister; and a number of nieces and nephews. PLYMALE, Mary Ruth 79 of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 7, 1996 at the Augusta Medical Center in Waynesboro, Va. Mrs. Plymale was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Plymale and a brother, Roy C. Montgomery. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years. Mrs. Plymale was involved in numerous volunteer and civic organizations, including the Optimist Club of Roanoke. Her principal involvement was as a Nurse Assistant at the Veterans and Lewis Gale Hospitals. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas M. and Sandra Plymale, Waynesboro, Va., Monty W. and Sarah Plymale, Roanoke; grandchildren, Ryan, Michael and Justin L. Plymale. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Memorial Fund at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3911 Greenland Avenue, Roanoke, VA. 24012. RICHARDSON, Nancy Lee Coombe, 51, of Radford, passed away Thursday, March 7, 1996, at her home. She was born at Rich Creek, the daughter of the late Richard and John Coombe and Dorothy Dobbins Coombe of Rich Creek. She was a retired nurse, and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to her mother, include her husband, Robert Lee Richardson of Radford; three sons; David Richardson of Salisbury, N.C., John and Jim Richardson, both of Radford; one daughter, Cathy Richardson of Radford; one brother, Richard R. Coombe of Lorton; four sisters, Mrs. Marian Hess of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Mrs. Martha McConnell of Chester, N.J., Mrs. Dorothy Ney of Richmond, and Mrs. Janet Davis of Rich Creek. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 1996 at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Radford with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating. SMITH, Leanna Hylton, 83, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, March 7, 1996, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg. She was born November 22, 1912, at Willis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew D. Smith. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and June Smith of Christiansburg; a granddaughter and her husband, Anna and Steve Millirons of Christiansburg, and several nieces and nephews. THOMPSON, James Kelly, (``Tom Cat''), 58, of Bland, died Wednesday, March 6, 1996, in a R oanoke hospital. He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Woodrow and Juanita Thompson. He was a graduate of Bland High School and a U.S. Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Pam Thompson, Bland; a daughter, Renee T. Sluss, Bastian; three sons, Tony Thompson, ``Buck'' Thompson, and John Kelly Thompson, all of Bland; two stepsons, Steve Gills, Bluefield, W.Va., Haven Gills, Pulaski; a stepdaughter, Susan Gills, Bluefield, W.Va.; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; one sister, Robin T. WHITMORE, Winfred Benson, 75, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, March 7, 1996 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Lexington on July 3, 1920, he was t he son of the late Herbert and Annie Benson Whitmore. He was retired from Burlington Industries after 34 years service. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, and was a World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Marie Shaw Whitmore, Buena Vista; two daughters, Betty Jo Tetzloff, Buena Vista, and Bonnie Jean Jones, Stafford; three grandchildren, David Ray Jones and Danny Wayne Jones, both of Stafford, and Dawn Shree Tetzloff, Buena Vista; four sisters, Elizabeth Smith and Louise Hayslette, both of Richmond, Irma Cauley, Arlington, and Gwendolyn Fix, Lexington; a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul R. Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.
