Five homes and gardens in South Roanoke will be open to the public April 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as part of Historic Garden Week in Virginia.
Following are the homes and gardens available for viewing:
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Frith, 3236 Somerset St. The home is decorated with a number of Persian carpets and art from North America and Eurasia, including a Satsuma desk lamp from the 1880s and a double-handled 1910 water porcelain water urn from the Orient.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moffitt, 3144 Allendale St. This red brick copy of Georgian architecture was one of the first houses built in the "Prospect Heights" section of South Roanoke. The awning-covered brick porch overlooks an azalea and daffodil garden which is enclosed by a serpentine brick wall.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Brooks III 2912 Avenham Ave. This urban "foursquare farmhouse" was built in 1916.
The home of Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Blackford Noland Jr., 2632 Richilieu Ave. This cottage-style English Tudor home has a slate roof, leaded-glass windows and oak floors. The garden is filled with boxwood, wisteria, hemlock, daffodils and azaleas.
"Oak Knoll," at 101 27th St., is owned by Drs. Dan and Lily Hodges. This Georgian home, built in 1926, features a circular drive with mature boxwood framing the large exterior.
The homes selected for the tour are within walking distance of each other, however, bus service is available. Bus origination points will be at the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs, 2713 Avenham Ave., and at the South Roanoke United Methodist Church at 24th Street and South Jefferson Avenue.
Block tickets for the tour are available for $12 at each house or at the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs. There is no single-house admission.
Lunch served by the women of South Roanoke United Methodist Church is available at the church. Coffee and sweet rolls will be for sale beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. For information, or to make reservations, call Bettie Halsey at 342-4884, or Stephanie Williams at 776-0632.
Proceeds from the tour, sponsored by the Mill Mountain Garden Club and the Roanoke Valley Garden Club, will benefit the Garden Club of Virginia's projects, which include restoring grounds and gardens at historic sites around the state.
