Speedway events

RADFORD - New River Valley Speedway is sponsoring several spring events.

The New River Valley Car Show will be held at the New River Valley Mall today. The show is sponsored by New River Valley Speedway.

New River Valley Speedway will hold open practice on Saturday, March 30.

A media day will be held at the speedway on April 3, from noon to 3:30 p.m.

Saturday art classes

CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County Schools will offer Saturday morning art classes in April and May to students in grades 9-12.

Students will choose classes in batik and papermaking, oil painting, weaving or sculpture and mold making.

The program will run for eight Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at Christiansburg High School.

Applications can be obtained from art teachers throughout the school system. Submit a portfolio of work and an application by Monday. Students selected to participate will be notified by March 18.

Easter baskets

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley's Operation Easter Bunny provides Easter baskets for patients at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion.

Volunteers are needed to fill Easter baskets with artificial grass, Easter candy and decorations, toiletries, stationery, stamps and books. Glass, sharp objects and balloons should not be included.

Since the baskets will be delivered by Easter, volunteers are requested to have baskets completed by March 29.

Groups or individuals interested in preparing one or more baskets should call Paula Denton at 382-5629 or (800) 559-2800.

Discipline workshop

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech Resource and Referral Service will offer a free workshop on positive discipline techniques for young children. The workshop, "Why do You do the Things You do?" will be presented by social worker Debbie Schneller. The workshop is for family day care providers, directors of child care programs, teachers, assistants, and others who work with young children in a group setting.

The session will be held in the Community Room of the New River Valley Mall on Thursday, March 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
