ALLS, Gordon C., Jr., 59, of New Castle, died Thursday, March 7, 1996 at his home. He is survived by one daughter, Norma Ann Alls Short, Roanoke; three sons, Gordon C. Alls, III., Troy, Illinois, Carson Wayne Alls, Galax, Charles H. Alls, Princeton, W. Va.; two sisters, Gloria Putnum, Elliston, Grace White, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, March 10, 1996 at Boitnott Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. The family requests contributions be made to Craig County Rescue Squad or Craig County Fire Department in lieu of floral contributions.

ALTIZER, Eva H., 87, of Vinton, passed away Friday, March 8, 1996. She was a member of the Vinton Baptist Church and the Amoma Sunday School Class. Mrs. Altizer was retired from Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Maxine A. and James V. Parker, Vinton; one grandson, James B. Parker and wife, Pamela, of Westminster, Md.; two great-grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Parker; one sister, Bertha Altice, Vinton; one brother, Elmo Hammack, Roanoke; a numer of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11 a.m. Monday with Dr. William L. Ross officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Food Pantry of Vinton Baptist Church. GILLESPIE, John Wharton, of Tazewel l, died Wednesday, March 6, 1996, in a Richlands hospital after a very short illness. He was born in Pounding Mill on September 16, 1908, son of the late Robert K. and Katherine O'Keeffe Gillespie. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ellen Buston Gillespie; a daughter, Kate Gillespie Williams and her husband, George W. Williams, of Charlottesville; two grandchildren, Warren Gillespie Williams of Decatur, Ga. and Jennifer Ellen Williams of Charlottesville; and a sister, Ollie Kate Hunter of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 9, 1996, at 3 p.m. at the Tazewell Christian Church with the Rev. Robert Wallace and the Rev. Eddie Nash officiating. GROSECLOSE, Pauline Harris, (``Polly''), 78, of Chilhowie, died Friday, March 8, 1996, at her home. She was the widow of Charles William Groseclose. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Evelyne Groseclose, Chilhowie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kitty and Charlie Haynes, Chilhowie, Margaret and Bill Sickinger, Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Micheal Groseclose, David Haynes, Lesa Sickinger, Lynn Bohannon; one great-grandson, Tyler Bohannon. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Chilhowie United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry D. Goodman officiating. Burial will be in the Sulphur Spring Cemetery. HALL, Clarence E., 70, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, March 7, 1996, at his home. He was born in Roanoke, started retail business 1945 with Shultz-United until 1965. He worked with Woods Department Stores in North Carolina until 1980 and retired in 1988 while working for Maxway Stores. He was married for 41 years to the late Geraldine Edwards Hall. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Barker Hall; two sons, Donnie L. Hall, Orange, Ronnie W. Hall, Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Becky H. Davis, Savannah, Ga.; a stepson, Richard Barker, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 1 p.m. Monday. JOHNSON, George, (``Gib''), 70, of Route 3, Marion, died Thursday, March 7, 1996 in Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, Johnson City, Tenn. Gib Johnson was a native of Smyth County, a retired M. Sgt., serving in the USMC in World War II, and serving in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. He had 21 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jesse M. Vannoy. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Maiden Johnson, Marion ; daughter, Marcia Vannoy, Marion; sons, Gary Johnson, Marion, Gerald Johnson, Marion; brothers, Gordon Johnson Sr., Seven Mile Ford, Wade Johnson Sr., Marion; sisters, Mattie Shorey, Seven Mile Ford, Grace Olsen, Beaumont, Texas; grandson, Cody Johnson; stepgrandson, Chris Eskridge; stepgreat-granddaughter, Amber Eskridge; daughter-in-law, Kathy Johnson, Marion. Funeral services for Mr. George ``Gib'' Johnson will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Totten officiating. LUCAS, Hubert Sidney, Jr., 76, of Pembroke, died Thursday evening March 7, 1996 at Giles Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Born in Kimballton, Va. on March 15,1919, he was a son of the late Hubert S. Lucas Sr. and Icie Elizabeth Snider Lucas. He was retired from the Sanitation Dept. with the City of Salem, and was a veteran of the U. S. Army, WWII and a member of American Legion Post 68. Preceding him in death were four brothers, Archie Lucas, Roy Lucas, Paul Lucas and Woodrow Lucas; one sister Eloise Snider; one daughter Lois Bates; and one granddaughter Crystal Wright. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Mann Lucas; three sons, Harold S. Lucas, Sr. of Pembroke, Stanley A. Lucas and Stewart A. Lucas, both of Roanoke; seven daughters, Donna All of New Castle, Carol Via of Memphis, TN, Elizabeth Wright of Ridgeway, Linda Paxton and Vickie Williams, both of Roanoke, Brenda Garman of Catawba, Mildred Naff of Henry Co.; three sisters Katherine Victor, Constance Davidson, and Elizabeth Darnell, all of Pearisburg; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 10, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. MEEK, Joseph L., 72, of Marion, died Friday, March 8, 1996 in Colonial Hills Health Care Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was born in Smyth County, attended Marion College and was a veteran of World W ar II, serving in the United States Army. He was a bookkeeper for Lincoln Industries and later owned and operated several successful businesses in Smyth and Washington Counties. He is survived by his wife, Helen Lieto Meek of Marion; two daughters, Janet Lieto Meek of Johnson City, TN and Mary C. Harris of Richmond; three granddaughters, Terra Lynn Meek of Louisville, KY, Jessica Paige McNutt of Johnson City, TN and Lara D. Harris of Newport News; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 11, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Cemetery. RICH, Ethel Kate Hanshew, 91, of Roanoke, formerly of Rural Retreat, died early Friday March 8, 1996 at the home of her son. She was born March 9, 1905 and was preceded in death by her husband, William McKinley Rich, Sr. She is survived by a son & daughter-in-law, W.M., Jr. (Bill) and Bernelle Rich of Roanoke; a granddaughter and husband, Regina R. and John F. Vance; three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alison, & Alicia Vance, all of Birmingham, Ala.; four sisters, Ollie H. Atwell, Viola H. Anderson, both of Rural Retreat, Bessie H. Kincer, Elsie H. SMITH, Leanna Hylton, 83, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, March 7, 1996, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg. She was born November 22, 1912, at Willis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew D. Smith. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and June Smith of Christiansburg; a granddaughter and her husband, Anna and Steve Millirons of Christiansburg, and several nieces and nephews.
