GEORGIA-PACIFIC MAKES CHANGE AT BIG ISLAND PLANT

Georgia-Pacific Corp., an Atlanta-based forest-products company with operations in Bedford County and a distribution center in Roanoke, has announced that PAT PURDY, operations manager for the Big Island mill's recycling facility, has been promoted to general manager of the Big Island operations. He replaces JOE KERTIS, who has been promoted to general manager of the company's Toledo, Ore., operations.

Before joining Georgia-Pacific in 1995 as manager for Big Island's new linerboard operation, Purdy was vice president and general manager at Inland Container Corp.'s Rome, Ga., linerboard mill from 1992 to 1995.

He started his career in the pulp and paper industry in 1978.

GARY L. HARRIS has joined System4 Advertising Agency in Roanoke as vice president and controller. Harris formerly worked for Media General Inc. and its Richmond Newspapers unit.

BANKING

JEAN H. MILLS and CAROLYN RIDDLEBERGER have been promoted to vice presidents at NationsBank in Roanoke. Mills, who joined the bank in 1977, manages the Starkey Road and South Roanoke branches. Riddleberger manages the Crossroads branch.

KEITH A. HOELZER has been promoted to vice president of commercial banking at First Union National Bank of Virginia in Roanoke. He joined the bank in 1989.

I. PATRICIA HENRY, plant manager for the Miller Brewing Co. in Eden, N.C., and a resident of Collinsville, has been elected to the board of directors of MainStreet BankGroup Inc. in Martinsville.

Bank Services of Virginia Inc. in Oak Level has announced several promotions: GEORGE H. GUTSHALL of Martinsville has been named vice president and comptroller; JANE ANN DAVIS of Collinsville has been selected assistant comptroller; BETTY O. LINEBERRY of Floyd County has been named a loan review officer; BRENDA B. HYLTON of Spencer has been selected funds management officer; and DEBORAH WOOD of Bassett has been named operations officer. The company is a service organization for Patrick Henry National Bank, First National Bank of Rocky Mount, Peoples National Bank, Community National Bank, Blue Ridge Bank, Patriot Bank and the Mortgage Co. of Va.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

MICHAEL J. MARTIN has been named executive vice president of Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties, a nonprofit corporation that handles the marketing of technologies generated at Virginia Tech.

FOOD SERVICE

WAYNE BOBBIT has joined Quality Coffee Co. in Roanoke as service manager.

HEALTH CARE

ALAN WILLARD has joined Roanoke-based Associates in Brief Therapy as a licensed professional counselor specializing in spouse abuse and step-family issues and stress, grief and divorce recovery.

MANUFACTURING

DICK EPHGRAVE has been elected vice president of credit for Bassett Furniture Industries. Formerly director of credit, Ephgrave joined Bassett in 1990.

Westvaco Corp., a New York manufacturer of paper, packaging and chemicals with a bleached board division in Covington, has named JOHN A. LUKE JR., who is president and chief executive officer, to the additional post of chairman.

MEDIA

THOMAS C. HONER has been promoted to sales manager of television station WSET's Roanoke office. He will be responsible for sales in Roanoke and the New River Valley. He has been an account manager with WSET for 13 years.

RON SHANDLER has been hired as circulation manager for Leisure Publishing Co. in Roanoke. Shandler's experience includes positions as a marketing analyst in Doubleday's Book Club Division, a market specialist with New England Business Service and marketing director for MacLean-Hunter Publishing Co. in Boston.

MEDICAL

DR. ROBERT SLACKMAN has joined the medical staff at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley as a subspecialist in gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Before joining the hospital, which is part of Carilion Health System, he was in private practice in Boca Raton, Fla.

DR. ANDREW C. BOCKNER of Roanoke has become a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, a nonprofit corporation based in Englewood, Colo., that provides physicians with continuing education on the medical treatment of obesity and its associated conditions.

ORGANIZATIONS

KIRK LUMSDEN, president of Lumsden Associates, engineers, surveyors and planners in Roanoke, has been installed as the 1996 president of the Virginia Association of Surveyors Inc.

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of Credit Unions has elected officers for 1996: TIM HESSON, manager of Roanoke County School Employees' Federal Credit Union, president; DONNA HARRIS, manager of VARO Federal Credit Union, vice president; PAM BASHAM, loan manager, GE Federal Credit Union, secretary; and LETA JANNEY, manager of member services, GE Federal Credit Union, treasurer.

GORDON A. EWALD of Ewald-Clark Inc. has been elected territorial vice president of Photo Marketing Association International, based in Jackson, Mich. Ewald will head the Dixie division of PMA, which comprises nine Southeastern states.

TRANSPORTATION

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal marketing department in Roanoke has been reorganized into three groups focusing on its basic market segments, each headed by an assistant vice president. They are TOM RAPPOLD, domestic utility and industrial; MARK BOWER, export and metallurgical; and JIM HUNTER, coal resources and marketing services. They will report to BILL FOX, vice president for coal marketing.
