Services: Hutt specializes in veterinary care for horses, a speciality that can be involved, and at times trying for her. Horses, she said, are "in a strange category," because some of them are farm or breeding animals, and others are considered pets. Her phone can ring at any hour with an emergency, and she and her new four-wheel-drive truck are off on another house call. Hutt, who works out of her home and truck, provides all aspects of equine care, ranging from vaccinations to help with foaling. As an added service, she offers routine small-animal care during her visits.
Fees: Potential clients are given a quote after the proposed job is studied.
About the owner: Hutt, 36, graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in May 1995 and decided to remain in the New River Valley because she is a longtime resident and enjoys the area. She started her business in January after learning that no large-animal practice in the area was looking for a partner. Much of her time since then has been spent marketing herself, a process that has included attending shows and events, distributing fliers and knocking on doors. "Starting a business is a whole business in itself," she said. She also has found time to attend to sick horses.
