IN SERVICE

Staff Sgt. Ronald Merchberger has been selected as the non-commissioned officer of the Quarter for the First Quarter of Training Year 1996 for the 229th Chemical Company, located in Roanoke. Merchberger, of Dublin, competed against five other soldiers to achieve this title. Merchberger lives in Dublin with his wife.

Two area residents recently graduated from the motor transport operator course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. They are:

Army Reserve Pvt. James Osborne, a 1993 graduate of Christiansburg High School and the son of Harold and Janice Osborne of Christiansburg.

Army Pvt. Paul Viall, son of Carol Evens of Floyd.

Navy Hospitalman Melissa Perich has reported for duty at Naval Hospital, Twentynine Palms, Calif. Perich joined the Navy in December 1993. She is the daughter of George Richardson of Pearisburg.

Air Force Airman Stephen Johnson has graduated from the security police apprentice course at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Johnson is a 1993 graduate of Giles County High School. He is the son of Paul and Barbara Johnson of Pearisburg.

Navy Fireman David Melton recently returned to San Diego after completing a six-month overseas deployment aboard the ship USS New Orleans. Melton is a 1994 graduate of Pulaski County High School and joined the Navy in July 1994. He is the son of Douglas and Stella Melton of Pulaski.

Rebecca Horne has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of airman first class. Horne is a conventional systems Morse operator at Misawa Air Base in Japan. She is a 1993 graduate of Pulaski County High School. She is the daughter of Patricia Stanwitz and stepdaughter of Jack Stanwitz of Dublin.
