UVA UPENDS PRINCETON IN LACROSSE

Top-ranked Virginia took a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter, then held on to defeat second-ranked Princeton 12-9 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Saturday in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers (2-0) were led by junior attackman Doug Knight, who scored four goals, and teammate Michael Watson, who added three goals and two assists.

Virginia outshot the Tigers 47-43. Princeton's record dropped to 1-1.

In other lacrosse:

* Washington and Lee overcame a slow start to defeat Hampden-Sydney 16-9 in the first round of the third annual W&L Lacrosse Tournament in Lexington.

Ande Jenkins, Adam Butterworth and Russell Croft led the Generals (4-0) with three goals each and Shane McLaughlin added two. Nine Generals scored in the game.

Washington and Lee will play Cortland State, an 18-14 winner over St.Mary's (Md.) in the other first-round match, today.

* Colgate scored four consecutive goals in the second half to hand the Virginia Tech women's team a 10-8 loss in the Hokies' opener at Tech Park in Blacksburg.

Catherine Augustyn and Amy Mantooth each had a hat trick for Tech. Heather Dent (Northside High School) scored a first-half goal for the Hokies.

ETC. Clemson tops Tech in baseball

Fifth-ranked Clemson jumped on Virginia Tech early and held on to win 6-2 in a baseball game at Clemson.

The Hokies (4-4) had a chance to get back into the game in the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but Tigers reliever Rodney Williams came in to retire a pair of Tech pinch hitters on ground balls.

Chad Foutz (Franklin County) finished with two hits for the Hokies.

* Washington and Lee senior Josephine Schaeffer broke her school record and finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

* Ferrum's Jimmy Hamilton tossed a complete game one-hitter as the Panthers defeated Greensboro 2-1 in Greensboro, N.C.

Riley Hodges (Franklin County) drove in both runs with a first-inning hit. Hamilton finished with nine strikeouts and two walks.

* Virginia Tech junior John Dattalo won the 177-pound weight class at the Colonial Athletic Association wrestling tournament at George Mason University in Fairfax.

Dattalo earned a berth in the NCAA tournament with a 6-5 victory over Rob Barlow of George Mason. The Hokies finished fourth in the team competition with 46.5 points.

* Cyclists Michael Stearns and Mike Glowczynski of Roanoke's Team Smiley took first and third place, respectively, at the 23-mile Winning Edge Criterium, Category Four, in Hampton.

* Wes Wilmer of Roanoke's Team Xaloy finished sixth in the Road Race Regional Masters Championship cycling event in Ocala , Fla.
