A woman died Saturday afternoon in Wythe County after the car she was riding in ran off the right side of southbound Interstate 81 at mile marker 83 and hit an embankment.
Judith Mason Brown, 54, of Lake Providence, La., was taken to Wythe County Community Hospital about 12:45 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 1:38 p.m., according to state police. Brown was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Brown's husband, Joseph Brown, was the driver of the car. A police report said he fell asleep at the wheel. He has been charged with reckless driving.
The car's air bag inflated and was credited by police for saving Joseph Brown, who also was not wearing a seat belt.
