MOOMAW, Ruth Manges, 76, of Roanoke, died Saturday, March 9, 1996, in a Salem hospital. She was born in Botetourt County on March 3, 1920, to Charles and Nellie Sprinkle Manges. She married Thurston Styne Moomaw on April 25, 1942. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dr. Charles Frank Manges of Blacksburg and George Manges of California, and one sister, Ressie Manges Meador of Springfield and formerly of Roanoke. Besides her husband, survivors include her two children and their families, T. Michael and wife Jo of Collinsville, and John E. and wife Pattie of Chamblissburg. Also surviving are her sister, Hortense Manges Firebaugh of Roanoke; her adopted daughter, Monika Bjorklund of Montvale; her sister-in-law, Helen Manges of California, and four grandchildren, Mark Moomaw and Amy Moomaw of Roanoke, and Joanna Moomaw and Melanie Moomaw of Chamblissburg. Burial will be private in Haymakertown Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4040 Williamson Road, at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Lane officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.

MOXLEY, Rheba Phipps, 78, of Independence, passed away Friday, March 8, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday, Reins-Sturdivant Chapel.

MYERS, Archie S., 95, of Roanoke, died Friday, March 8, 1996. He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Loretta and Donnie Flowers, Roanoke, Linda and Mark Griffith of Colorado, Barbara and Russell Carter, Roanoke, Louise Gude of South Hill; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Homer and Chris Myers of Pennsylvania, Clinton Myers, Roanoke, Harold and Carolyn Waldron, Hardy, Ralph and Linda Myers of South Carolina; three sisters, Mae Dooley, Fincastle, Ollie Trussler, Vinton, Lizzie Lacks, Fincastle; one brother, Jim Myers, Rocky Mount; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 11,1996 at 2 p.m. at the Rader Troutville Chapel, with the Rev. Irvin W. Sloan and the Rev. John Hurley officiating. NORRIS, Michael J., 35, of Pittsburgh, Pa., died Thursday, March 7, 1996. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh. Burial was held in Parrish, Ala. PAINTER, Bernard Stage , 87, of Roanoke, died Friday, March 8, 1996. He was born on March 18, 1908 in Rockbridge County, the second son of the late Robert Newton and Lillie Grove Painter. He retired as a Power Plant Engineer with the State of Virginia. Mr. Painter was a Past Master of Boone Lodge #247 A.F. and A.M. Mr. Painter was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Calhoun Painter; five brothers, Maynard S. Painter, Samuel T. Painter, Paul D. Painter, Wallace R. Painter, Troy K. Painter. Surviving are his son, Kenneth D. Painter, Greenville, Texas; daughters, Shirley P. Williams and Nova J. Painter, both of Roanoke; brother, the Rev. Robert L. Painter, Elliston; sisters, Hettie P. Ramsey and Lorene P. Grant, both of Waynesboro; former wife and friend, Melva F. Painter; grandchildren, Kathy Perrin, Jackie Mann, Vicki Sprague, Bill Painter, all of Waco, Texas, Paul Painter, Greenville, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel, by the Rev. John Ingram. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. PARKER, Lula Johnson Austin, 82, of Natural Bridge Station, died Saturday, March 9, 1996, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Parker was born May 11, 1913, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Thomas Johnson and Molly Woods Johnson. She was a member of the Arnold's Valley Southern Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by a son, Herman Samuel Austin, and two husbands, Samuel Lewis Austin and Ariff Edward Parker. Surviving are a son, Harry Lee Austin of Natural Bridge Station; a son and daughter-in-law, Berton and Faye Austin of Natural Bridge Station; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Bill Coleman of Buena Vista, Shirley and Ralph Daniel of Kernersville, N.C., and Carol and Eddie Patterson of Buena Vista; a brother, James Johnson of Roanoke; a sister, Doris Campbell of Lexington; 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, 1996, in the Arnold's Valley Southern Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Stine officiating. Burial will follow in the Glasgow Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington.

PERKINS, Effie M., 76, of Fairborn, Ohio, passed away Friday, March 8, 1996, at her residence. She was born April 19, 1919, the daughter of Ross R. and Faraby Robinson Alls. She was retired from DESC as a clerical assistant. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Perkins Overson of Medway, O hio, and Linda Perkins Oakley of Springfield, Ohio; two sons, Daniel D. Perkins of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Patrick T. Perkins of Fairborn, and seven grandchildren, Tim Overson, Dale Oakley II, Cynthia Oakley, Melanie Perkins, Alison Perkins, Michael Perkins and Carly Perkins. Other survivors include four nieces, Della Snider, Claudine Saville, Patsy Shepherd and Loretta Albert; one nephew, Jerry Price, all of Blacksburg Va., and several cousins. ROBERTS, Josie Bell Beavers, 62, of Salem, died Saturday, March 9, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. She is survived by her husband, William Wiley Roberts; one daughter, Billie Jo Hampton of Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Cornel and Tracy Roberts of Boones Mill, and five grandchildren, Barry G. Underwood II, James Mitchell Hampton, Makenzie J. Hampton, Charles William Roberts and Aja Nicole Roberts. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, at Kingdom Hall in Salem, with Mr. Gino Wygal officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the home. SLOAN, Thomas M. Sr., 78, of Lexington, died Thursday, March 7, 1996 in the local hospital. A son of the late Mrs. Bertha Wiggins Sloan, he was born November 27, 1917 in Henderson, N.C., where he attended the public school. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After moving to Lexington, he became a member of the First Baptist Church. He was employed at Washington and Lee University until his retirement in 1984. His affiliations included the P.P.P. Social Club, V.F.W. and the Helping Hand Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice W. Sloan; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas M. Jr. and Gwendolyn Sloan; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Jarva S. and Ivory Fields, all of Lexington; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Friends may call at the Sloan residence, 507 Maury Street at any time. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 14, 1996, at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Willie E. STAPLES, Frances Cole, 78, of Route 1, Box 148, Hiwassee (Cecil's Chapel Community), died Friday, March 8, 1996 in the Radford Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Shelby Cole and Bessie Elkins Cole. She was born on February 11, 1918 in Hiwassee, Va. She was a life-long resident of Pulaski County and was well known to many area residents in her work as Program Assistant and later as County Executive Director of the Pulaski County ASCS Office from 1957 to 1981. She was a member of the Pulaski Church of Christ. Surviving are two daughters, Frances Darleen Staples, Joaquin, Texas, Carol Metz Faulkner, Cecil's Chapel Community; two grandchildren, Daniel Cole Metz, Cecil's Chapel Community, Laura Marie Metz, Cecil's Chapel Community; and several nieces and cousins. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, with the Rev. Jonathan Webster officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens.
