Fifth-ranked Roanoke College scored the first four goals and held on for a 10-8 upset of No.3 Gettysburg (0-1) in a Division III men's lacrosse game in Gettysburg, Pa., on Sunday.
Doug Jones led the way for the Maroons (2-0) with three goals and three assists. Keith Wempe added two goals and two assists and William Metz scored two goals. Doug Cote had two goals and two assists for Gettysburg (0-1).
In other lacrosse:
* Justin Ronayne scored five goals as Cortland (N.Y.) State knocked off Washington and Lee 11-7 in the championship game of the W&L Lacrosse Tournament in Lexington.
Cortland State (2-0) led 9-4 early in the fourth quarter before the Generals (4-1) made a late run.
* Lehigh used a seven-goal second quarter to open its season with a 19-10 victory over VMI in Richmond.
Ian MacGilbray and Todd Moyer scored six goals each for the Engineers, who are ranked No.25 in the coaches' poll. Joe Brockman had four goals for the Keydets (1-1), who trailed 11-4 at halftime and never recovered.
BASEBALL Ohio beats Radford twice
Radford University opened its home baseball season with a pair of tough losses to Ohio University.
The Highlanders (2-8) dropped the first game 4-3 in nine innings after Ohio tied the score at 3 in the top of the seventh. Terry Rooney (0-1) took the loss for Radford, giving up an unearned run in 1 2/3 innings.
Jeff Collins sparked a three-run fourth inning with a two-run homer for the Highlanders.
In the second game, Jamie Booth (0-2) took the loss for Radford as Jeff Graham delivered a two-run pinch double to spark a 5-4 victory for Ohio (4-0). Rob McCandless hit a two-run homer and Mike Lombardi had a solo shot for the Highlanders.
* Kris Benson pitched a two-hitter and struck out a career-high 17 as Clemson blanked Virginia Tech 4-0 to complete a three-game series sweep in Clemson, S.C.
Benson (4-0) has struck out 57 and walked only four this season.
Kevin Kurilla and David Fitt had the only hits for the Hokies (4-5), both doubles. Doug Livingston went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Matthew LeCroy hit a solo home run to lead Clemson (14-2).
Roanoke swimmers dive in
Lissa Wood placed in two events to lead the Carter Center Aquatics team during the weekend at the Virginia Swimming Swimming Senior Championships in Woodbridge.
Wood was 10th in the 50-yard freestyle and 12th in the 200 breast stroke. Other CCA swimmers who placed and their finishes: Blair Huffman, 10th, 200 breast stroke; Michelle Roach, 12th, 200 butterfly; Lana Thompson, 17th, 200 breast stroke; Vince Baranauskas, 20th, 200 breast stroke; Laura Dichtel, 20th, 100 backstroke; and Doug Hartman, 23rd, 200 breast stroke.
* Mike Stearns of Roanoke's Team Smiley finished first in Category 4 at the 37-mile Jefferson Cup cycling race in Charlottesville. Ben Nielsen of Roanoke's Xaloy team finished third.
* Seven Roanoke Star players were selected to participate in a regional tournament against players from 12 states during the Virginia Olympic Development Soccer tryouts at Green Hill Park. John Hartman, Michael Kramer, Andy Leffler, Paul Wallace, Don Haga, Jorge Rivera and Russell Hutchinson beat out 600 other players for a chance to play in a tournament at Rider College in New Jersey.
