ALIFF, Nova Weddle, 77, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, March 9, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Aliff. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Arthur N. (Junior) and Rita Underwood, Vinton; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Underwood, Thaxton, Joyce and Danny Dickinson, Thaxton, Doris and J ames Wilson, Vinton; sisters and brother-in-law, Nola StClair, Portsmouth, Clyde and Harry Moffit, Chesapeake; special sister-in-law, Terrie Weddle, Roanoke; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 12 noon Tuesday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel, by the Rev. Carter Sloan, with burial in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. BUCHANAN, Mona Davis, 80, of Burkes Garden, died Sunday, March 10, 1996 at a Bluefield, W Va. hospital. Born on October 16, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Dona Keister Davis. She was a member of the Burkes Garden Lutheran Church and had served on the Church Council for several years. Mrs. Buchanan was treasurer of the Burkes Garden Telephone Company, a member of the Burkes Garden Homemakers Club, and had participated in many other community activities. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Philip Buchanan, Sr. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Buchanan Vaughan of Pulaski; one son, James Philip Buchanan, Jr. of Daleville; six grandchildren, Mason Akers Vaughan, III, Lisa Renee Vaughan, Mary Katherine Slomka, Lee Buchanan Phillips, David Owen Buchanan, and John Raymond Coleman; three great-granddaughters; one brother, Jack Davis of Bluefield, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday March 12, 1996 at the Burkes Garden Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Friends may call at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 11, 1996. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Burkes Garden Cemetery Association or the Burkes Garden Lutheran Church.

CARTER, Martha, 66, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, March 7, 1996. The wake will be at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church in Christiansburg from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday. COPPER, Ruth May Wood, 91, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, March 9, 1996 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Amherst County, Va. on April 1, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Henry and Kate Brown Wood. She was retired from Burlington Industries and a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses North Congregation, Lexington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Montrey J. Copper. Surviving is one sister, Annie Thompson of Buena Vista and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 1996, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel, with Morgan Chewning officiating. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery. FLINCHUM, Ethel Harper, of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 10, 1996. She was the widow of Rufus J. Flinchum. Mrs. Flinchum was a charter member and former Sunday School teacher at Williamson Road Church of the Brethren. She also was a former member of the Oakland Home Demonstration Club. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Hazel F. and Dr. Herman W. Brubaker of Roanoke; grandsons, Dr. H. Wallace Brubaker and wife Susan Miller Brubaker of Chambersburg, Pa., and the Rev. LINKOUS, Pansy Louise, 82, of Shawsville, died Saturday, March 9, 1996 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. Born in Montgomery County on September 5, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Robert Clayton and Minnie F. McMahon Linkous. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m Tuesday, March 12, 1996 at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Blacksburg, with the Rev. John Smith officiating. MARTIN, Blake Shank, 91, of Salem, died Sunday, March 10, 1996, at Richfield Nursing Center. She was retired from Samuel Speigle Furs. She was preceded in death by children, Louis J. Martin Jr., R. Kelly Martin and Billy G. Martin, and a brother, Joseph R. Shank. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-laws, Edna (``Angel"") Martin and Robert W. Staton of Salem, and Aileene Martin and Jay G. Harrison of Madison Heights; a half sister, Rachel Craig of Blue Ridge; 11 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. MINTON, Garnett Edward, (``Eddie""), 72, of Salem, died Sunday, March 10, 1996, in a Salem hospital. He was retired from the City of Salem. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Bane Minton; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Margo and Ira Wolfe of Salem; one sister, Reva Howell of Salem; his mother-in-law, Clara Bane of Salem, and a very special pet, Bear-Bear. OGDEN, Helen Morris, 70, of Natural Bridge Station, died Saturday, March 9, 1996 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care. Mrs. Ogden was born September 22, 1925 in Rockingham County, a daughter of the late Rosser S. Morris and Lucy Barton Morris. She was a member of the Beth Horon United Methodist Church and was the widow of Earl Linden Ogden. Surviving are four sons, Edwin David Ogden, Lynchburg, William Michael Ogden, Chester, Charles Patrick Ogden, Gladys, John Preston Ogden, Natural Bridge Station; one sister, Loraine Allen, Elkton, and five grandchildren. ROBERTSON, Katherine Mae Burgess, 81, of Chester, died Sunday, March 10, 1996. She was the widow of Harry Leigh Robertson and is survived by her daughters, Margy R. Burton and Patricia R. Sparks; son, Velvin Whitmore Robertson; brother, V. Nelson Burgess; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Robertson was a retired school teacher with Chesterfield County. Her remains rest at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd., (Rt. 10) Richmond, Va., where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday. SPENCER, Alva Luck, 88, of Lexington, died Sunday, March 10, 1996 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mr. Spencer was born October 7, 1907 in Bedford County, a son of the late Sidney Alexander Spencer and Sallie Metts Spencer. He was co-owner of the University Cleaners in Lexington for over 25 years. Mr. Spencer was a member of the Men's Bible Class, present Trustee and past Deacon and Treasurer for over 25 years of the Manly Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Topping Spencer. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John L. and Judi Spencer, Lexington, Charles R. Spencer and Debra Lovelace, Roanoke; two grandsons, Jeffrey Spencer, Key West, Fla., Eric Spencer, Lexington; two sisters-in-law, Nellie Spencer, Rockbridge Baths, Kitty Spencer, Waynesboro; two special friends, Beulah Sandridge, Bessie Paxton, both of Staunton. STINNETT, William H., (``Bill""), 88, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, March 9, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene E. Stinnett. Mr. Stinnett was a retired employee of the N&W Railway, and attained the rank of Captain in the National Guard. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law , Audrey S. and Gerald T. Lee of Moneta; grandchildren, Gary Lee of Moneta, Terry Lee and wife Terry of Irvine, Calif., and Timothy Lee and wife Lyn of Hollins; four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces including Mary Frye of Salem, James McCraw of Roanoke and John Raymond Stinnett of Salem. TURNER, Curtis Scott, 80, of Salem, passed away Saturday, March 9, 1996, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Turner was a partner of Turner Brothers Contractors, and was founder and longtime supporter of the Roanoke Valley Horse Show. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edie Smith Turner; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Dan Joiner, and a special grandson, Nathaniel, all of Salem; a sister, Gladys Robertson of Rocky Mount; also, numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Born on August 19, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Emmett H. and Bessie Caldwell Yopp. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald and Kris Yopp and David Yopp of Rocky Mount; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ella Mae and Willie Jones, and Rose and Granger Holloman of Rocky Mount; a brother and three sisters-in-law, Woodrow and Kathleen Yopp, Dot Yopp and Maggie Yopp of Radford; one grandson, Justin Yopp; several nieces and nephews, and one special friend, Joe Nichols of Rocky Mount.
