Sunday is St. Patrick's Day, a holiday celebrated in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. You're likely to see a lot of green - green derbies, green shamrocks and green leprechauns - all symbols of St. Patrick's Day. It might make you wonder what St. Patrick did to deserve all this attention.
Saint Patrick was the son of a deacon. When he was 16, he was captured and taken to Ireland. After six years, he escaped by ship. He returned to Ireland, however, and began to organize Christian communities and convert the pagans.
In A.D. 432, he was named bishop. He built churches, trained clergy, and introduced the cultures of Rome and other parts of Europe to Ireland. He also taught Latin. He died in 461, and is considered the patron saint of Ireland.
You don't have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Roanoke will hold a parade on Saturday at 3 p.m. Registration will be held from 2-2:45 p.m. at the First Union Tower Plaza.
