The home of Franklin County High School Principal William B. Gibson was destroyed by fire Monday.
Gibson and his family, on vacation in Florida, were unaware of the blaze as of late Monday afternoon, said Claude Webster, the county's director of public safety.
Family members planned to break the news to the Gibsons when they flew in Monday night, Webster said.
The fire started about 10 a.m. Monday. It was discovered when a farmer spotted smoke and followed it in his car to the two-story renovated farmhouse in a hollow about a mile off Virginia 619 just south of Rocky Mount.
Not much of the home is left standing, Webster said.
An investigation was continuing late Monday, and no cause had been determined. Early indications do not point to foul play, Webster said.
