ALEXANDER, Helen Eugenia, 76, of Silver Springs, Md., departed this life Saturday, March 9, 1996 at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Springs, Md. She was Born November, 1, 1919 to the late Murriel and Lillie Alexander. She was a faithful and dedicated member of the Church of the Nativity, Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by one sister, Millicent Conner, two brothers, Tyree and Clarence Alexander, one foster brother, Joseph Delany. Survivors include one sister, Serena (Arthur) Twyman of Cincinnati, Ohio; three brothers, Roland (Joyce) Alexander, Fairview Heights, Ill, Billie (Queen), George (Marie) Alexander; one foster brother, Douglas (Australia) Delaney, all of Radford; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends; and two special friends, Maye Clark of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Petty Brown of Washington, D.C. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday at the Claytor-Dean Funeral Home, with graveside services to follow at Sunrise Burial Park. Father Jim Grealish will officiate. AUSTIN, Daniel R., 83 , of Route 5, Rocky Mount, died Monday, March 11, 1996, at his residence. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and was a retired dairy farmer. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Flora Austin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Orville Bower, Rocky Mount, Carol and Robert Montgomery, Wirtz, Marilyn and Jim Updike, Bedford; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kay Austin, Bastian; grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Glenna Bower, Wayne and Angie Bower, Donnie and Charlene Bower, Dale and Sandy Bower, Dwaine and Opal Montgomery, David and Myrtle Montgomery, Lisa and Billy Bowman, Dena and Allen Layman, Sherry and Eric Buck, Tammy and Mark Flora, Kim and David Boyd; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother and sister-in-law, Elder Alfred and Orpha Austin, Rocky Mount. BACKHUS, Rev. Dr. Harry W. III, of 1009 Old Country Club Rd. N.W., passed away Saturday, March 9, 1996, in his 88th year. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Hermann Backhus. Dr. Backhus served as Pastor in the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, including three terms as District Superintendent, once on the Alexandria District, and twice on the Norfolk District. He retired from the active ministry in 1977, and moved to the Roanoke United Methodist Home. In retirement, he served for four years as Associate Pastor of First United Methodist Church, Salem. A service of death and resurrection will be held at First United Methodist Church, 125 West Main St., Salem, on Wednesday, March 13, 1996, at 11 a.m. A private interment will be held at a later date. COVINGTON, Percy Lee, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, March 9, 1996. CRIGGER, William F., (``Bill''), 85, of Peppers Ferry Road, Wytheville, died Saturday night, March 9, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was a retired construction worker. DICKERSON, Nellie R., 100, of Salem, died Sunday March 10, 1996 in Camelot Nursing Home. She was the oldest member of Central United Methodist Church, Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judd ""Dick"" Dickerson; and daughter, Louise D. Owensbey. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanette D. Carter and Kathleen ""Kitty"" Richards; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Eula Bell, Fla. GUYNN, Miss Golda Pearl, a lifelong resident of Carroll County, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 9, 1996, at her home in Hillsville. She was the daughter of James Crockett and Laura Edwards Guynn. She grew up on the family farm and was educated in the public schools of Carroll County. She was a proud graduate of the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in English. Some years later she took her M.A. in English from Columbia University, and, much to the surprise of most who knew her, thoroughly enjoyed her time in New York City. She taught for almost 50 years in the Carroll County school System. For most of that time, she taught senior English at Hillsville High School and, later, at Carroll County High School. Her high standards caused many students to complain when they took her courses, but, in later years, those same students often expressed their particular appreciation for the quality of her teaching. Indeed, she rarely went out without meeting a former student or two, and their affectionate greetings meant a great deal to her. She was an active member of the Colonial Dames, the D.A.R., Delta Kappa Gamma, Eastern Star, the Retired Teachers Association and various local and state teachers organizations, and the United Methodist Women. She was for many years th e Treasurer and main stay of the Worrell Guynn Cemetery Association, and worked diligently to maintain and improve the cemetery. Each June on decoration day, she spent the entire day at the cemetery, greeting her friends and reminding them that it was time once again to contribute to the upkeep. She was the last member of her generation of the family and will be sadly missed by all the family. She is survived by one nephew, Gary A. Guynn of Galax; and three nieces, Ann Guynn Gillis of Ward, Colo., Jeanne Guynn Lewis of Buies Creek, N.C., and Beth Guynn of Hillsville. Services will be held at Vaughn Guynn McGrady Chapel in Hillsville on Wednesday, March 13, 1996, at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at the Worrell Guynn Cemetery. LEARY, William Peter, 67, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Friday, March 8, 1996 at his residence. He was born in Lynn, Mass. on June 8, 1928, a son of the late Daniel Joseph Leary and Helena Healey Leary. He is survived by his wife, Carole A. Leary; five sons; and two daughters; two brothers; one sister; four grandchildren. LEWIS, Charles W. Sr., 73, of Glasgow, died Monday, Marc h 11, 1996 at his home. He was born September 22, 1922 in Botetourt County, son of the late Howard A. Lewis and Grace Barger Lewis. He was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Buchanan. He was retired from Burlington Industries after 46 years service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Lewis. He is survived by three sons, Stephen J. Lewis of Richmond, Harold E. Lewis and Charles W. Lewis Jr., both of Buena Vista; two daughters, Ellen Mae L. Camden of Buena Vista and Cynthia L. Scott of Big Island; three sisters, Elsie Tomlinson of Waynesboro, Catherine Roberts of Cobbs Creek, and Aileen Wade of Merritt, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Dorothy S. LEWIS, Thurna Hunley Leslie, 83, of 803 Park Street, Altavista, died Monday, March 11, 1996, at Sandra Waldron's home in Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Virgil B. Lewis. Born September 25, 1912, in Roanoke, she was a daughter of the late Stoney C. and Lelia Fitzgerald Hunley. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, and a retired employee of K-Mart. She is survived by two sons, Ralph B. Leslie Jr. and his wife, Veneda, of Roanoke, and Wayne E. Leslie and his wife, Irene, of Altavista; four sisters, Margaret H.. Hartman, Virginia H. Shutters and Dorothy H. Milam of Roanoke, and Geraldine H. Nelson of Altavista; two brothers, Harold E. Hunley and Stoney C. Hunley Jr. of Roanoke; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. REICHNER, Ronald Glenn, 43, of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 10, 1996. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Phillip Reichner and a brother, Samuel Reichner. Surviving are two children, Nick Reichner, Cape Coral, Fla., Misty Reichner, Roanoke; mother, Nora Pissanos, Roanoke; brothers, John Reichner, Dublin, Nick Pissanos, Roanoke; sister, Lisa Pissanos, Roanoke; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews. TATE, Mildred Thurow, of Blacksburg, passed away quietly Sunday, March 10, 1996 at her home. She was the wife of Dr. Leland B. Tate, retired professor of Sociology at Virginia Tech. She was born near Macksville, Kansas to the late Carl and Mary Elise Simon Thurow. She was a graduate of Kansas State University, the University of Iowa, and received her Ph.D. degree from Cornell University. She was a devoted educator all her professional life, ranging from her early experience as a Specialist in Parent Education and Family Life at the Merrill-Palmer School to that of Dean of Women and Department Head of Home Economics at VPI, the later position which she was responsible for developing and administrating until her retirement in 1958. Her selected honors include: Home Economics Hall of Fame, Kansas State College; Fellow, Social Science Research Council; Chairman, Virginia Commission on Higher Education; President, Virginia Home Economics Association, as well as membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Theta, Omicron Nu, and Delta Zeta, Honorary and Professional Sororities. Her outstanding books include: Home Economics as a Profession, Adjustment Problems of College Students and Family Clothing. After her retirement she traveled extensively through the world. A more detailed description of her professional career can be found in her long time listing in ""Who's Who of American Woman"". She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Elise Daniels; and a grandson, Seth Daniels. A memorial service will be held Thursday March 14, at 1 p.m. at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert G. Hobbs officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Tech Foundation Inc ., designated for the College of Human Resources, for the Mildred Tate Scholarship Fund. TOLLEY, William Warren, 84, of Lexington, died Sunday March 10, 1996 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born July 18, 1911 in Roc kbridge County, he was the son of the late Joseph Warren Tolley and the Bertie Beatrice Hanger Tolley. Mr. Tolley was a member of the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Helen Staton Tolley, Lexington; son, Harry W. Tolley, Madison Heights; two brothers, Robert Tolley, Roanoke, Lewis Tolley, Lexington; one sister, Garnett Rice of Indiana; two stepgrandchildren, Paula Cross of North Carolina, Patsy Dinkins, Madison Heights; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. TRIVITT, Mary Pack, 88, of Clintwood, died Monday, March 11, 1996 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center, Clintwood, Va. She was born in Blacksburg, Va. and had made her home in Clintwood, Va. She and her husband had been married for 63 years. Mrs. Trivitt was a member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church and she was a member and past president of the Clintwood Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Allen Pack and French Pack Jr. She is survived by her husband, Blaine Trivitt, Clintwood; three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Betty Jo) Quesenberry, Pulaski, Mrs. Mack (Sue Carole) Clarke, Suffolk, Mrs. Bert (Mary Lea) Byer, Kingsport, Tenn.; one sister, Melissa Taylor, St. Simon, Ga.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mary Pack Trivitt will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Clintwood United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating. Mrs. Worrell was employed as a seamstress a t Cross Creek Apparel in Wytheville, a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church, and delivered the Roanoke Times for approximately 30 years. She was the widow of the late Albert Worrell. Survivors include her mother, Thelma Armstrong Bridgeman, Marion; sisters, Mary C. McCready, Savannah, Ga., Cannie Somervell, Chilhowie; brothers, William McCready, Lansing, N.C., Harold David Armstrong, Wytheville, Curtis B. Armstrong, Martinsville, Mark A. Armstrong, Vinton, Luke Armstrong, Marion; stepsister, Annie M. Greer, White Marsh, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Inez Worrell (Tiny) will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, in the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Burial will follow inthe Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett's Marion Funeral Home.
