MARCH 15 DEADLINE FOR CROP INSURANCE

Farmers who want to participate in any of the federal commodity-support, farm-loan or conservation-reserve programs must buy federal crop insurance on their corn, sorghum or soybean crops before a March 15 deadline.

The Federal Farm Service Agency will hold informational meetings on crop insurance March 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. at the Botetourt County FSA office in Daleville. Meetings also will be held at 1 p.m. on March 11 at the Craig County FSA office in New Castle and at 7 p.m. March 12 at the Roanoke County office on Apperson Drive in Salem.

Farmers must have at least basic catastrophic insurance coverage to participate in the federal programs. Such insurance covers 50 percent of the crop yield at 60 percent of the market price and is available through private companies as well as the FSA.

Any additional insurance coverage must be bought through a private reinsured company.

The FSA imposes an administrative fee of $50 per crop per county up to a maximum of $200 for the insurance.

For more information call Fryda Powell at (540) 864-5451 or other local FSA offices.
