First Union Corp. is one of seven U.S. companies honored for its policies that support women or men with family responsibilities.
The award is sponsored by the National Council of Women in the United States, an affiliate of the International Council of Women. Winners were selected based on questionnaires mailed to all Fortune 500 companies. The Charlotte, N.C.-based banking company is parent of First Union National Bank of Virginia, which has its headquarters in Roanoke.
First Union's achievements include a new employee resource and referral service called LifeWorks, which was instituted last year.
By calling the LifeWorks toll-free number, First Union's 40,000 employees can get advice on topics ranging from helping teen-age children deal with peer pressure to finding affordable nursing care for an elderly relative.
Also cited were two on-site child care centers at First Union's operations center in Roanoke and at the bank's corporate headquarters in Charlotte.
The National Council of Women also cited nine other programs including mothers rooms in seven cities, parenting seminars and support groups, and job-sharing and flex-time opportunities.
