NASHVILLE STAR GETS ECHL'S TOP AWARD

Hugo Belanger of the Nashville Knights was named the East Coast Hockey League's Most Valuable Player and Richmond's Roy Sommer was tabbed the league's coach of the year, the ECHL announced Monday.

Belanger leads the league in scoring with 128 points on 49 goals and 79 assists. Sommer, who coached the Renegades to the 1995 Riley Cup championship, has Richmond in first place in the ECHL's East Division with second-best record in the 21-team league.

Other winners were rookie of the year Keli Corpse of Wheeling, goaltender of the year Alain Morissette of Louisville and defenseman of the year Chris Valicevic of Louisiana.

In other sports news:

* Charleston Southern took advantage of four Virginia Tech errors to knock off the Hokies 6-1 in a non-conference college baseball game in Charleston, S.C. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Hokies (4-6).

Charleston Southern (6-7-1) broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on three Tech errors with Kyle Stout's two-run single being the key hit.

Tech's only run came in the top of the fifth when David Fitt doubled and scored on a single by former Franklin County standout Chad Foutz's single. Foutz had two hits on the day.

* Coastal Carolina won its seventh straight game by sweeping Radford 6-2 and 3-1 in a Big South softball doubleheader in Conway, S.C.

Lori Reilly led the Highlanders (13-9, 0-2) with two hits in the first game and both Susie Rath and Cindy Larkin had two hits in the second game. Coastal Carolina is 9-1, 4-0.

* The Roanoke Star under-11 girls soccer team won the Chesterfield Spring Invitational tournament this past weekend. The Star compiled a 3-0 record by shutting out all its opponents. Lindsay Leffler was in goal for Roanoke.
