From among thousands of expected entrants in Guinness' "Win Your Own Pub In Ireland" contest, one U.S. resident, age 21 or older, will receive keys to the Seanachaoi Pub in the town of Killaloe situated on the banks of the River Shannon.
"Seanachaoi" - pronounced Shan-a-key and meaning "storyteller" in Gaelic - is fitting as the pub's name, as its new owner must capture the "essence and nature" of Guinness stout by penning a creative finish to the phrase "Guinness is..." in 50 words or less.
The historic town of Killaloe (pronounced Kill-a-loo) is nestled in Ireland's County Clare. In the center of town sits the Seanachaoi Pub, symbolizing the tradition of the pub as a meeting ground and hub for conversation and story-telling. Traditionally, the town "Seanachaoi," or storyteller, would spend the evening telling colorful tales to townspeople as they relaxed with a pint.
In late April, Guinness will announce one finalist from each of 10 regions in the country. In May, each finalist and a guest will fly to Ireland, courtesy of Aer Lingus, to tour Dublin and travel to Killaloe to determine who will take ownership of the pub. The final phase of competition, which consists of a series of pub games, will take place at the Seanachaoi.
