VDOT WILL MAP OUT ROAD PLAN FUND ALLOCATION TOPIC OF HEARING

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a hearing April 2 at the Salem Civic Center about highway construction in the 12-county Salem Transportation District.

This year's fund-allocation hearing is at the civic center on Roanoke Boulevard instead of in the Salem district office, where it has been in the past. It will begin at 9 a.m.

Scheduled to attend the hearing are Virginia Secretary of Transportation Robert Martinez, state Transportation Commissioner David Gehr and members of the Commonwealth Transportation Board, including Salem District representative Lorinda Lionberger of Penhook.

Projects under consideration are those on interstate, primary and urban roads, which are numbered between 1 and 599. Roads in the secondary system, with numbers 600 and above, will be dealt with at separate hearings by county boards of supervisors in conjunction with VDOT.

Hearing participants are asked to limit their comments to five minutes, and groups are asked to name a spokesperson to voice their concerns, VDOT officials said.

The hearing schedule is:

9:30 a.m., speakers from Bedford, Franklin, Henry and Patrick counties; Bedford and Martinsville; and Rocky Mount and Stuart.

11:30 a.m., speakers from Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties; Galax and Radford; and Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Dublin, Hillsville, Narrows, Pearisburg and Pulaski.

12:30 p.m., speakers from Roanoke, Botetourt and Craig counties; Roanoke, Salem and Vinton.

Anyone who doesn't speak at the hearing may send written comments within 10 days afterward to Fred Altizer Jr., Salem District Administrator, VDOT, P.O. Box 3071, Salem 24153.

After the hearing, the Transportation Board will propose a six-year road construction plan for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Officials will discuss that plan in Salem in June.
