The state police, in an appeal for help from the public, released Tuesday what it called a projection of how an abductor in the disappearance of a graduate student might be acting.
The projection was compiled by the state police and the FBI.
Alicia Showalter Reynolds, 25, of Baltimore disappeared March 2, leaving her car along U.S. 29 near Culpeper. She was last seen with a man in a dark Nissan pickup who appeared to be assisting her.
After Reynolds was reported missing, police received more than 20 calls from women claiming that a man who fit the description stopped them, or tried to stop them, on U.S. 29 corridor between Manassas and Charlottesville in recent months.
According to the police projection, the man:
* appears anxious, fearful, suspicious and apprehensive.
* may have taken annual leave or sick leave last week. If he did work, he may have exhibited unusual behavior.
* may have made a sudden change in appearance.
In many of the instances reported, the man convinced the women that their cars were giving off smoke or sparks and offered them a ride. None was harmed.
Anyone with information should contact the state police at (540) 829-7400 or (800) 572-2260.
