EPPLEY, Beulah France Hobbs, 93, of Pearisburg, died Monday, March 11, 1996 in Giles Memorial Hospital. Born in Giles Co., Va., she was a daughter of the late William Elbert and Alice Candler Ferguson. S he is survived by eight sons, Amos Hobbs, Nathan Hobbs, Franklin Hobbs and Willie Hobbs, all of Pearisburg, Richard Hobbs and Woodrow Hobbs, both of Huntington, W.VA., Elbert Hobbs of Salem and Dallas Hobbs of Michigan; one daughter, Pauline Asbury of Michigan; one brother Harry Ferguson of Rich Creek; four sisters, Mary Hobbs of Roanoke, Martha Hobbs, Lora Mullins and Vivian Griggs, all of Rich Creek; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1l a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

CAREY, Lon Jordan, of Bedford, better known as ``Sarge,"" said so long to us all Monday, March 11, 1996, at 5:35 a.m. in Bedford County Memorial Hospital in Bedford. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mrs. Lillie P. Carey; five children, Lon J. Carey Jr. of Albany, Ga., the Rev. Dorothy Faulkner of Hempstead, N.Y., Mrs. Dianne Gunther of Germantown, Md., Raymond C. Anthony of Hyattsville, Md., and the Rev. Laura L. Carey of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry H. Carey of Bedford; one sister, Mrs. Virgie Williams of Bedford; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Camaria Carey of Bedford, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. Homegoing services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Western Light Baptist Church Cemetery in Bedford. The remains will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m. the day of the service. Bedford Funeral Home, Bedford, is in charge of arrangements.

COLE, Nellie L. Mills, 88, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 11, 1996 in a local hospital. Mrs. Cole was the widow of Hobert G. Cole, and a member of Hollins Road Church of the Brethren. Surviving are three children, Robert Mills, Bluefield, W.Va., Roger Mills, Roanoke, and Mrs. Carol Wray, Roanoke; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. JACKSON, Joseph Guy, 86, of Laurel Fork, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 1996, at his home. Born in Carroll County on March 27, 1909, he was a son of the late Ewell Jackson and Virginia McGrady Jacks on. He is survived by a sister, Goldie Jackson McGrady of Hillsville; a brother, John Purroy Jackson of Laurel Fork, and five nieces and nephews, Rebecca McGrady Floyd, Susan Jackson Hatcher, Joseph Alva McGrady, John P. McCOLLUM, Loretta, (``Ba Ba""), 41, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord, Monday, March 11, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Lee and Vera McCollum and brother, Michael McCollum. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Robert E. (Tootie) McCollum; brothers, William L. McCollum, Curtis L. McCollum, Kenneth R. McColl um, all of Roanoke; a host of relatives and friends. MEADOR, Raymond L. Sr., 83, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 12, 1996. He was a charter member of Airlee Court Baptist Church and more recently, a charter member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. Mr. Meador was the first teacher of the Men's Sunday School Class at North Roanoke Baptist Church, a Deacon and a member of the Singing Saints Senior Choir. He was a 50 year member of Williamson Road Lodge #163 A.F. and A.M. Mr. Meador retired from Hajoca. Surviving are his devoted wife of 58 years, Virginia Bell Meador; daughter, Doris Meador Kinsey and husband, Alvin W. DeLong, Roanoke; son, Raymond L. Meador Jr. and wife, Peggy S. Meador, Fincastle; grandchildren, Cyndee K. Basham and husband, Chip, Renee M. Cahoon and husband, Frank, Jenny K. Meador; great-grandson, Caleb Cahoon; sister and brother-in-law, Edna M. and Fred P. Altice, Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews, including, Patty A. Jarrett and husband, A. J., Raleigh, N.C.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ralph H. MULLEN, G. Lucille, 75, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Tuesday, March 12, 1996, at Raleigh Court Health Care Center after a prolonged illness. She was born in Troy, N.Y., the daughter of Hugh and Hazel Graham. She is survived by her husband, John T. Mullen, Col., USAF (ret.); daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Benjamin Straub of Salem, and grandchildren, Preston Straub and Stephen Straub. Private services will be held in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a later date. The family suggests that memorials be made to a favorite charity. NASH, Alleta Jo, 72, a native of Roanoke, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, March 11, 1996. She was the widow of Barnes H. Nash, also of Roanoke. Alleta Jo was born November 19, 1923 in Newport News--the youngest daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Looney. Mrs. Nash was extremely well known in the Roanoke area for her extraordinary musical talent as well as her unsurpassed competency as a music teacher. She and her husband spent their lives in the music industry--in radio, TV, theatre, stage band performance, and teaching--in the Roanoke and Bluefield areas as well as in Florida. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1940, and by that time had won numerous state and national music competitions in piano. She was an accomplished organist as well, and served as choir director and organist in several area churches. She came back to her home town in 1991 after spending many years in Florida with her husband. During her long career as a musician and teacher she was affiliated with the Thursday Morning Music Club, the Virginia Music Teachers Association, the Roanoke Valley Amateur Organ Club, and the Roanoke Valley Community Band. She was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church, the Carrie Lee Chapter of the Eastern Star and was closely associated with Melody Haven of Roanoke where she taught piano one day a week. She taught piano and organ at home full time, bringing joy and success to numerous students, both young and old alike. She will be greatly missed by many. She is survived by her three children and their families, son, Buddy Nash of Vallejo, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Cathy Purdy Nash of Roanoke and their two children, Sam and Sarah Joy; daughter, Theresa (Tess) Nash Sentelle of Roanoke and her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jamie Sentelle of Austin, Texas. She had one great-grandson, Joshua Stephen Sentelle, age four. Mrs. Nash was the niece of Mrs. James O. (Katherine) Bell of Bluefield. Surviving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews include Mr. and Mrs. Jack Starkey of LaHabre, Calif. and their five children; Mrs. Phyllis Starkey, widow of nephew Dan Starkey of Vinton, and her three children; great-nephew David Wayne Starkey of North Carolina; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Foutz of Gainesville, Fla., their two children and their grandchildren; Mr. David Looney of Groton, Conn. and his two sons; M artha Catherine Lorenz of Villa Hills, Ky. and her two sons; and Larry Scott of Roanoke and his children. She is also survived by her two very dear friends, Mr. Robert Ireland of Pensacola, Fla. and Mr. Jack Peterson of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, at Cave Spring Baptist Church, by Pastor Rick Elmore. A private family burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton.

PARKS, Mary M., 83, of Route 1, Box 108, Pembroke, died Saturday, March 9, 1996, in Washington Hospital Center. She was born September 12, 1912, in Giles County, a daughter of the late Thornton Parks and Blanche Parks. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pembroke. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Doris Shipman of Washington, D.C.; a son, Evangelist Dan Parks of Pembroke; a brother, William Wayne Parks of Salem; a sister, Lyda Wagner of Bridgeport, Conn.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and a host of relatives and friends. Durham of Mannheim, Germany; a sister, Lorraine Huffman of Iron Gate; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. SLAYDON, Charles W. Jr., 72, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March 12, 1996. He was a retired Tech Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was also with the Navy on the Battleship Missouri during World War II. Mr. Slaydon retired from General Electric Corporation. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Alexander Slaydon; and is survived by two sons, John C. Slaydon, Stuart A. Slaydon; two daughters, Nancy Robertson, Cindy King, all of the Roanoke area. Also surviving are four grandchildren. SMITH, Mabel S., 83, of Roanoke, formerly of Charleston, W. Va., died Tuesday, March 12, 1996 in Camelot Hall Care Center. She was born in Ottawa, W. Va. She was retired as a Beautician and was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney C. Smith. Mrs. Smith had served on the Roanoke Co unty Planning Commission after being appointed in 1975 and had served a total of nine years. She was instrumental in the acquisition and location of the Southwest County Postal Office. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William D. and Mona Sue, Roanoke; brother, Jack, Missouri; sister, Joy Evans, Fla.; grandchildren, Tammy and Racheal, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. D. Michael Meloy officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, W. Va. WHITE, Mary Likens, 84, of Christiansburg, died Monday, March 11, 1996 in Meadowbrook Nursing Home. She was born February 22, 1912 in Snowville to the late Robert and Catherine Likens, and was preceded in death by her husband, Ben White; a son, Bobby White; and a grandson, Ricky Harris. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Edward Harris of Christiansburg; four grandsons, Ronald, Tommy and Barry Harris of Christiansburg, Danny White and wife, Norma, of Virginia Beach; four great-grandsons, Justin, Travis and Matthew Harris of Christiansburg, Daniel White, Virginia Beach; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and George Holmes; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dewey and Mary Likens, Edison and Virginia Likens; a sister-in-law, Wilma Likens, all of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Layne Board, with burial in the Snowville Baptist Church Cemetery.
