BRIDGEWATER TOPS W&L IN BASEBALL

Courtland Rodamer scattered four hits over seven innings Tuesday to lead Bridgewater past Washington and Lee 10-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball game in Bridgewater.

Rodamer (2-1) struck out seven and allowed only an unearned run in the first inning and a solo homer to the Generals' Preston Miller to lead off the second.

Bridgewater (4-4 overall, 1-0 ODAC), which has won 10 consecutive games over the Generals (3-6, 0-1), was led by catcher Chris Sabatino, who drove in five runs, including a three-run homer in the fifth.

Matt Ermigotti (1-3) took the loss for W&L.

In other baseball:

The Citadel sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth inning and scored five runs to blow open a close game as the Bulldogs downed Virginia Tech 7-3 in Charleston, S.C.

Tech (4-7), which has lost five in a row, had taken a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Kevin Kurilla scored on an error, but the Bulldogs (11-10) answered in the bottom of the inning as the first eight men reached base.

Three Florida pitchers combined for a four-hitter and the Gators scored eight runs in the second inning en route to a 10-1 win over Radford at Gainesville, Fla.

Sergio Rodriquez struck out four, allowed two hits and one earned run, and walked two as he picked up his first collegiate victory at Florida (16-5). Jason Anderson (1-3) took the loss for Radford (2-9). The starter struck out one, allowed three hits and eight runs, six of them earned, and walked six.

Designated hitter Chad Gordon went 1-for-2 and drove in Radford's lone run.

LACROSSE Maroons win ODAC opener

Senior Billy Metz scored four goals and collected two assists as Roanoke rolled past Guilford 22-2 in an ODAC men's lacrosse matchup in Salem.

The Maroons held a 14-1 advantage at halftime. Keith Wempe and Brian Bernazanni scored three goals each, and Jason Davenport and Jeff Jones added two goals for the Maroons (3-0 overall, 1-0 ODAC).

Zack Karantonis exploded for five goals and three assists, and B.J. Forte added four goals to pace Radford (2-1) to a 26-3 men's lacrosse victory over Siena in Radford. The Highlanders (2-1) bolted to a 10-2 halftime lead before adding 10 goals in the third quarter to put away the game.

Claudia Ovchinnikoff scored five goals and Jen Edens and Carolyn Albright added four each as Temple rolled past Virginia Tech 22-3 in a women's lacrosse game in Philadelphia. Catherine Augustyn scored two goals for the Hokies (0-2). Ali Oglesby had six goals and one assist, and Gayle Avery added five goals as the Roanoke women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 17-9 ODAC victory over Randolph-Macon in Ashland.

Roanoker earns All-America status

William Fleming High School graduate Monica Cabbler placed sixth in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. The Georgia senior leaped 43 feet, 11/2 inches to claim her first NCAA All-America award.

Katina Horton, who holds the 1995 national title in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly, will compete in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Nationals this weekend at Emory University in Atlanta. Horton will swim in three events, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly. The junior is the first Hollins swimmer to win a national championship.
