For the second consecutive year, VMI point guard Bobby Prince has been named to the GTE Academic All-America men's basketball team in the University Division.
Prince, a native of Blue Ridge and graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, will graduate from VMI in May with a 3.95 grade-point average in civil engineering. Prince was second in the Southern Conference in assists (5.6 per game), free-throw percentage (83.8) and steals (2.0).
He finished his career second on the Keydets' all-time assist list, with 452, and second on the steals list (177). He compiled the highest free-throw percentage in school history (82.5).
Prince's grade-point average actually rose in the past year, from 3.93 to 3.95. He is the first VMI basketball player to be named to a national academic squad since Andy Kolesar in 1980-81.
BASEBALL Tech snaps losing streak
Virginia Tech snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over Charleston Southern on Wednesday in Charleston, S.C.
Second baseman Kris Tuberville went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Austin Rappe was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Hokies (5-7).
Left-hander Brian Fitzgerald (2-1) went eight innings, giving up seven hits and all three runs and striking out eight. Charlie Gillian pitched the ninth to pick up his third save. Eric Finley (3-2) took the loss for the Buccaneers (7-8-1).
* Travis Andre and Matt Duncan drove in two runs each as Florida used a five-run sixth inning to down Radford 8-4 in Gainesville, Fla.
Radford (2-10) was led by Rob McCandless, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Florida is 17-5
* Jason Wilson's two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning gave Ferrum a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg in Lynchburg.
Wilson's homer came after Pat Daly had singled with one out and spoiled an excellent pitching performance by Lynchburg's Jason Jamerson, who went 102/3 innings and struck out seven. Jimmy Hamilton got the win, pitching 51/3 innings of shutout relief. Ferrum is 6-3-1 while Lynchburg is 1-4.
* Franco Martin hit a homer in both games to lead VMI to a sweep, 5-3 and 6-4, over Marshall in a Southern Conference doubleheader in Lexington.
In the first game, Scott Thompkins drove in three runs in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded double to tie the game at 3 and Martin followed with a two-run homer to lift the Keydets (3-13). In the second game, Martin's two-run homer in the seventh lifted the Keydets to the win. Marshall is 1-9-1
No. 1 UVa works OT in lacrosse
Attackman Michael Watson scored a career-high seven goals, including the winner 49 seconds into overtime, to give top-ranked Virginia a 16-15 victory over Brown in a men's lacrosse game played at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
Tim Whiteley, who set up the final goal, finished with six assists for the Cavaliers (3-0). Henry Oakey had four goals, and Doug Knight added two goals and four assists.
David Evans had five goals, all in the first half, to lead Brown.
* The Virginia Tech softball team lost a doubleheader to Winthrop 5-3 and 6-3 on Tuesday in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Hokies (0-8) lost a 3-1 lead in the first game, but rallied from a 5-0 deficit with a three-run sixth inning in the second game. Jennie Kallio, a Cave Spring graduate, had her best outing of the season in that game, pitching a complete game and allowing six hits and three earned runs.
