BERNA, Kayren Jo, 45, of Fairfield, Iowa, and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 1996, at her home, after a long battle with breast cancer. Kayren was a beautiful, compassionate person who devoted her life to helping others through teaching and transcendental meditation. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Margaret Berna, and is survived by her adopted son, Dale Stephens; and many loving friends from all over the world. A memorial service was held in Fairfield, Iowa.

BROTHERTON, Ruby Myers, 90, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, March 12, 1996 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center . Born in Montgomery County, she was the daughter of the late Scott and Cynthia Mary Cupp Myers. Mrs. Brotherton was a retired employee from the Food Service Department at VA Tech. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lee (Chick) Brotherton. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard L. and Jane M. Brotherton, McCoy, and John A. and Linda M. Brotherton, Blacksburg; grandchildren, John Scott Brotherton and wife, Keri, Brian Lee Brotherton, Robin B. Carner and husband, Bobby, all of Blacksburg, and Rosa B. Jennings and husband, Stephen, Jackson, Miss; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Friday, March 15, 1996 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. DeMAIO, Mildred A., of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 10, 1996 in a Salem hospital. She was the widow of Alfred A. DeMaio and a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. When she was more active, she was a member of the Nazareth Church Circles, a former member of Garden Gate Garden Club, once the head of the Roanoke Valley American Cancer Drive and involved in other community activities. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara DeMaio, Marian and William Danco, Roanoke; two grandsons, David and Douglas Danco, Roanoke; one brother, Joseph Rosano, San Diego, Calif. A Vigil Service will be conducted Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. after which the family will receive friends until 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Nazerath Catholic Church with Father Kenneth Stofft officiating. Burial at Saint Andrews Diocesan Cemetery will be followed by a reception at the church.

DRAPER, John A., 58, of 1 Braemar Terrace, Greenville, S. C., died Sunday evening, March 10, 1996 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Roanoke, Va., he was a son of the late John Amos Draper, Sr. and George Friese Draper. Mr. Draper was a engineering manager for PCS Development Company. Mr. Draper was a veteran of the Navy and served most of his tour on a nuclear submarine. Surviving are his wife, Sandra Price Draper of the home, a daughter, Melissa S. Draper, Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, Phyllis Haislip, Buchanan, W. Va., and Carole D. Mathews, Roanoke, W. Va. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 15, 1996 in the Community United Methodist Church of Crofton at 1 o'clock in Crofton, Maryland. FIZER, Ernest Wilson, 87, of Rou te 1, Bedford, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996 in Oakwood Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Bedford County on October 18, 1908, a son of the late William Elliott Fizer and Florence Perkins Fizer. He was the widower of Virginia Powers Fizer. He was a retired brick mason, a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific and was a member of Bedford Christian Church. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Doris F. and Emery Tolley; a grandson and his wife, Steven A. and Laura Tolley; two great-grandsons, Jeremiah Tolley and Shane Tolley, all of Bedford. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, March 15, 1996, at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. John P. Dunstan officiating. Military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #16. LYNCH, Aretta Milton, 75, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 1996 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born March 26, 1920 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Oscar L. Milton and Maggie Carter Milton. Her husband was th e late William J. Lynch. She was a retired employee of Belding-Corticelli, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.. She is survived by five sons, Oscar P. Goad, Randy W. Goad, Glenn B. Goad, all of Bedford, Robert L. Goad, Manassas, Albert M. Goad, Fayetteville, N.C.; one brother, Clarence Milton, Bedford; two sisters, Betty McMillian, Bedford, Lucille Brinn, North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. MANLEY, Robert L., (``Nance''), 92, of Big Island, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 1996 in the Bedford County Nursing Home. He was born March 22, 1903 in Bedford County, a son of the late John Eugene Manley and Ida Leftwich Manley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Tooley Manley; a brother, C. E. (Dick) Manley; and two sisters, Beulah Reynolds and Margaret Tooley. He was a retired carpenter, a member of the Big Island Hunt Club, and the Hunting Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by three daughters, Ida Jessie M. Smith, Big Island, Thelma M. Petty, Natural Bridge, Patria M. Johnson, Bedford; four sons, Talmadge T. Manley, Thaxton, Earl D. Manley, John R. She was born September 12, 1912, in Giles County, a daughter of the late Thornton Parks and Blanche Parks. She was a member of First Bap tist Church of Pembroke. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Doris Shipman of Washington, D.C.; a son, Evangelist Dan Parks of Pembroke; a brother, William Wayne Parks of Salem; a sister, Lyda Wagner of Bridgeport, Conn.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and a host of relatives and friends. SMITH, George Baxter, Jr. 79, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 1996. He was a loving and generous husband, father and grandfather who had a wonderful sense of humor and a real zest for life. He was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal church where he left behind many loving friends. He retired as district manger with Life & Casualty Insurance company with 40 years service. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginny) C. Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Carmen and Tim Clower, Gigi and Tommy Price; grandchildren, Joshua and Jennifer Price, Carrie Clower; sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace Perkins, Helen Walker, Elizabeth and Oras Clark, Marie and Bob Wells; a number of nieces and nephews. SNYDER, Ernest Cline, 93, of Norfolk, formerly of Troutville, passed away Monday, March 11, 1996. He was retired from Crossroads Elementary School as principal after 20 years. He was also an assistant principal at Norview High School and was principal at Fincastle High School for 15 years in Botetourt County. He was a graduate of Roanoke College in Salem and received his Master's Degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. He was a charter member and life member of Norview Lions Club, and recipient of Melvin Jones Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Services. He was a member of the Tarus Investment Club. He was an outstanding citizen and educator and a member of the Education Association of Norfolk, 1968 to 1969. He was preceded in death by a son, Peter C. Snyder, Blacksburg. He is survived by his wife, Louise Caldwell Snyder, Norfolk; daughter, Nancy Snyder and husband, Thomas C. Shoemaker, Virginia Beach; sisters, Dorothy Evelyn Caudill, Ruth A. Rader, both of Roanoke; brothers, Howard V. Snyder, Fincastle, Carl E. Snyder, Troutville; four grandchildren, Dan A. and wife, Susan Dixon, New Port Richey, Fla., Dana A. STRONG, Leonell Clarence Jr., 75, of Wise, died Tuesday, March 12, 1996 in Holston Valley Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Dr. Strong did his undergraduate work at Allehgeny College in Meadville, PA. and completed medical school at the Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Strong came to the Wise County area in 1965 and served as a medical doctor until 1983. Dr. Strong also served as the Wise County and City of Norton Medical Examiner. He was a retired Colonel of the U. S. Army, having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Dr. Strong was a Master Mason of Suthers Lodge 259, Norton, Va. He was Past President of the Wise County Shrine Club and also Past President of the Powell Valley Shrine Club. He was past Shriner of the Year at the Powell Valley Shrine Club. He was past Commander of the Kazim Legion of Honor. He was a member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke, Va. and a member of the Jericho Temple in Kingsport, Tenn. He was a York Rite Mason, past Commander of South Atlantic Shrine Association legions of Honor and also served, for over 25 years as Surgeon General of the International Legion of Honor. Dr. Strong had signed up over 600 children for the Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital. Dr. Strong was a member of the Wise Kiwanis Club and a life member of the D. A. V. He was past President of the Wise County AARP. Surviving are his son, Leonell Clarence (Lee) Strong III, Alexander, daughters, Melissa Strong, Susan Meredith (Sue) Strong, both of Roanoke; brother, Wilson W. Strong, Rochester, N.Y.; and nephew, Dr. Wilson Strong, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Memorial services will be conducted 2 p.m Friday in the Hagy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Jones officiating. Masonic Services will be conducted by Suthers Lodge 259 and Military Services will be conducted by Norton VFW Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56.
