5 seek 3 seats on Salem City Council

Two incumbents are among the five candidates seeking three seats on the Salem City Council.

March 5 was the deadline to file for candidacy in the May 7 elections.

Howard Packett and Alex Brown, who have served 12 and 16 years, respectively, on City Council are seeking re-election.

Mayor Jim Taliaferro, after serving 24 years on City Council and 221/2 years as mayor, announced in January that he will not seek re-election.

Three Salemites are running in their first try for elective office: former Salem Police Chief Harry Haskins, former Salem School Board Chairman John I. Moore, and Salem businessman Steve Smeltzer.

Vinton councilmen, mayor unopposed

Three Vinton councilman whose terms expire in June have no competition in the upcoming May election.

Unless there are write-in candidates, Mayor Charles R. Hill, and Councilmen Joseph L. Bush Jr. and C.Buford Barton will be unopposed on May 7. They were the only candidates to meet the March 5 filing deadline.

Hill was elected to council in 1976 and was first elected mayor in1980. Both Bush and Barton are completing their first four-year terms.

Two other council members, Robert R. Altice and William E. "Billy" Obenchain, have two more years each on their terms.

Vinton offers prizes for clean-up day

Vinton Town Council has authorized spending $150, $100 and $50 for prizes to the three groups that pick up the greatest number of bags of litter in the town on Clean Valley Day, which is March 30.

The prizes will be available to civic clubs, neighborhood groups or individuals, the authorization said.

K of C holds basketball semifinals Saturday

The semifinal games in the 27th annual Knights of Columbus Junior League Basketball Classic start Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Roanoke Catholic School gym.

The North Roanoke Cavaliers will meet the Troutville Heat at 3 p.m., and the North Roanoke Hokies will challenge the Vinton Hawks at 6:45 p.m. in Junior League play. The winners will advance to Sunday's finals.

In Little League, the Cave Spring Cougars will play the Cave Spring Hornets at 5:15 p.m., and the The Mount Pleasant Mavericks will play the South Salem Smoking Flames at 8 p.m. The championship will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

In the Pee Wee/Midget competition, the Cave Spring Blazers will meet the North Roanoke Blazers at 2 p.m., and the Fincastle Suns will meet the Cave Spring Trotters at 4:15 p.m.. The championship game will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Also on Sunday, cheerleaders from Vinton, Mount Pleasant and Fincastle will compete at 3:45 p.m.

Awards for all events will be presented at 6 p.m.

Library group holds fund-raiser Friday

Roanoke County's Friends of the Library and Sandra R. Eubank and Company will hold their third annual library fund-raising event Friday at 7 p.m. at the Roanoke County Library

The Dastardly Deeds Repertory Company will present "Diamonds are Coal Shade the Vampire" written and directed by local playwright Anna L. Bond.

The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. For tickets and reservations call 772-7507. The cost is $10 for Friends of the Library members and $12 for the general public. Free baby-sitting will be provided.

Roanoke holds school registration

Roanoke City Public Schools will hold registration March 21 and 22 for children entering kindergarten and first grade this fall.

Children currently enrolled in private kindergarten who will enter the public school system next year, as well as children who were eligible for kindergarten in 1995-1996 but were not enrolled may register at this time. Pre-school applications for 4-year-olds also will be accepted.

Children who will be 5 years old before Sept. 30 are eligible for kindergarten, and those who will be 4 before Sept. 30 are eligible for pre-school.

Parents should register at the elementary school their child will attend, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Attendance zone information is availableby calling 853-2816.

Recruits sought for Upward Bound

Upward Bound, a Roanoke College program to prepare high school students for college, is recruiting for its 1996 summer and fall sessions.

Students in the ninth- and 10th-grades at Northside, Salem, Patrick Henry, Glenvar and William Fleming high schools are eligible to attend.

Interested students should see their school counselors for information. All applications must be submitted by April 26. Call 375-2246 or 375-2314 for information.
