NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

Charles "Don" Crispin of Pulaski, recently published his poem "Journey's End" in The National Library of Poetry's book of contemporary poetry titled "Windows of the Soul."

The 42nd anniversary of the founding of the Inglewood Garden Club of Radford was observed at the March club meeting. Kate Bruce, the only charter member still active in the club, cut the anniversary cake and Barbra Klay presented a program on Master Gardeners.

Joyce Simpkins and Kate Bruce will be delegates at the Blue Ridge District meeting in Roanoke on April 1.

Jennie Simmerman received two first place ratings on her orchid specimens.

James "Buddy" Earp spoke at the March meeting of the Colonial William Christian Chapter DAR meeting on flag etiquette and his experiences in the Marines during World War II.

Billy Bowles was recently crowned Valentine King and Lillian "Icy" Jarrell was crowned Valentine Queen at Heritage Hall's annual Valentine's Day resident and family party.

Tonia Hoover and Guy Smith were recently added to the staff at the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands in Wytheville. Hoover, a Lebanon native, will be the social worker for the Buchanan Cottage, the Home's emergency care facility. Smith, a native of Pulaski, will be the social worker for the Webb Cottage, the Children's Home boy's residence.

The March meeting of the Mountain View Garden Club of Blacksburg was held at the home of Mary Jean Brown with Candy Springer as co-hostess. Susan Garrison, landscaper for the town of Blacksburg spoke. New officers are Evelyn Farrier, president, Candy Springer, vice president, Sally Pierce, recording secretary, Edna Bloom, corresponding secretary, and Maria Kappas, treasurer.

Nancy Brown is the new case manager for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New River Valley. Her former position was house parent/counselor at the Boys' Home in Covington.

Pulaski County United Way elected officers in March. Officers are Betty Lou Crawford, president, Kristi Carter, vice president, Peter Huber, treasure, and Jeannie Southern, secretary. Glenda Lindstrom and John Hager are new board members. Other board members are Donna Broadstreet, Bill Dawson, Chris Dux, Jane Farmer, Bill Hubble, Bill Matthews, Debbie McPeak, Tom Pullen, Walt Shannon, Ron Shelburne and Peggy White.

The Blacksburg Host Lions, Blacksburg Breakfast Lions, Christiansburg Lions and the Floyd County Lions Clubs announce the winners of the Bland Music Contest held in February at Best Western Red Lion Inn in Blacksburg.

Monica Renee Shelor, daughter of Larry and Karen Shelor and a junior at Christiansburg High School, won first place in the vocal division.

Melanie Beth Goodnight, daughter of Rev. and Rose Goodnight and a senior at Blacksburg High School, was the second place winner in the vocal division.

James Andrew Dickenson, son of James and Katie Dickenson and a senior at Christiansburg High School, won first place in the instrumental division. Dickenson is a classical guitarist.

Blacksburg High School freshman Elizabeth Jeanne Schumann won second place in the instrumental division. Schumann played piano. She is the daughter of Chuck and Linda Schumann.

Other contestants were Maegan Carin Simpson, Rachel Alison Thompson, Ashley Marie Hirt, Samantha Ann Elmore, Inez Edith Kratman, Erin Lee Youngman, Jeffrey Ford Skiles, Joshua Brisbin Skiles, Brandy Nicole Morgan, Robert Hancock Shelton and Christina Marie Longobardi.

The contest, sponsored by local Lions Clubs, was open to any instrumentalist or vocalist enrolled in school below the college level. First place winners will advance to the next level of the Bland Music Scholarship Contest.

Tara Hughes of Blacksburg was awarded Volunteer of the Month for the Humane Society of Montgomery County in February. Hughes has frequently provided foster care for animals that could not be accomodated by the shelter.
