TECH GETS HELPING HAND ON MOUND

Josh Herman had four RBI, and John Hand pitched a five-hitter for eight innings as Virginia Tech beat The Citadel 6-2 in a college baseball game Thursday in Charleston, S.C.

Herman, a former William Byrd athlete, was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Hand (2-2) had eight strikeouts for the Hokies (6-7). Hand and Charlie Gilliam, who pitched the ninth, combined to retire 19 of the last 20 Bulldogs batters. The Citadel is 11-12.

In other college baseball:

Tucker Bixby hit a three-run homer, and Chad Reynolds pitched 31/3 innings of scoreless relief to lead Washington and Lee past Savannah College of Art & Design 5-4 in Lexington.

The Generals (4-6) trailed 3-0 before Bixby's homer tied it in the fifth. Savannah College of Art & Design (11-8) added a run in the sixth before Reynolds (2-0) shut them out the rest of the way.

The Generals took the lead in the seventh on Tommy Esposito's run-scoring double and Craig Fantuzzi's run-scoring groundout.

VMI scored five runs in the seventh inning to rally and beat Marshall 9-8 in a Southern Conference game in Lexington.

Patrick Abelon and David Dixon each drove in three runs with Dixon driving in a pair in the seventh and Abelon bringing in another for the Keydets (4-13, 3-6 Southern), who swept a three-game series over the Thundering Herd (1-10-1, 0-3).

LACROSSE Hokies pick up first win

Alanna Cini scored four goals and had two assists and Melissa Wagner recorded two saves late as Virginia Tech held off St.Joseph's 16-13 in a women's lacrosse game in Philadelphia for its first win of the season.

Amy Mantooth added three goals for the Hokies (1-2). Shannon Feite had six goals and an assist to lead the Hawks (1-1).

Erika Snyder and Cinnie Logan each scored four goals as Washington and Lee (3-0, 2-0 ODAC) rolled past Lynchburg 12-5 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game in Lexington.

Lynchburg (0-1, 0-1) was led by Caitlin Sarkisian, who scored three goals.

Greg Schneider and Stuart MacMillian combined to score four goals assist on five others as Marist nipped Radford 11-10 in a men's lacrosse matchup in Radford.

Corey Fenley scored two goals and had four assists and Zack Karantonis scored three goals and assisted on two others for the Highlanders (2-2). Marist is 1-0.

SOFTBALL Radford sweeps Seahawks

Sheree Fletcher hurled a one-hitter over five innings to give Radford a sweep of UNC Wilmington, 8-2 and 8-0, in a non-conference matchup in Wilmington, N.C.

Fletcher (8-2) was backed up offensively by Erinn Corry, who hit a grand slam as the Highlanders (17-9) won the second game.

Laura Jewett (9-2) won the first game for Radford. Shannon Hiltner got the save and Karen Lee went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Highlanders play in the UNC Wilmington tournament starting today.

Christopher Newport swept Ferrum in softball in Newport News, winning 2-1 and 10-0.

Liz Urban paced the Panthers (3-5 overall, 0-2 Dixie), going 3-for-4 on the day with two triples, a single and a sacrifice fly. Christopher Newport is 8-3, 2-0.

Virginia State swim meet begins

The Virginia State Junior Olympics are being held at Radford University's Dedmon Center through Monday. More than 500 swimmers ages 8-through-14 from boys' and girls' divisions are competing.

The Southwest Aquatic Team (SWAT) will feature many swimmers from the New River Valley area. All events are free of charge. For more information, call Bill Beecher at 831-5240.

In the first two events of the meet Thursday, Harry Kessler, swimming for Carter Center Aquatics Marlins, finished seventh in the 1000 freestyle for the boys' 13-14-year-old division. Joshua Shepherd from RVSI finished 12 and Tommy Rappold of CCA Marlins was 20th.

In the girls' 1000 freestyle for the 13-14 division, Ann Durham of RVSI was fifth, Kara McKinney finished 12th and Emily Stark came in 19th.
