ALLEN, Hazel Key Brookman, 72, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldridge J. and Jessi e Sims Brookman, and her husband, E. Ernest Allen, Jr. Mrs. Allen was a member of Enon Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn Allen Burnett and husband, Dan, Rocky Mount; son, Michael S. Allen and wife, Patt, Roanoke; grandchildren, David Michael Burnett and wife, Tracie, Sheri Lynn Burnett, all of Rocky Mount; brother, Warren S. Brookman and wife, Phyllis, Roanoke; sister, Gladys B. Burger and husband, Roy, Hampton; sister-in-law, Frances Allen, Hardy; several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1290 Seminole Trail, Suite 2, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. William E. Hungate. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel.
BARNETT, William Hampton Jr., 88, of Salem, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996. He was a longtime Salem resident and often remembered his childhood in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he enjoyed riding in the Calgary Stampede. Mr. Barnett continued his love for horses as president of the Salem Riding Club. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Taylor Masonic Lodge #23 and was the last charter member of the Salem Volunteer Rescue Squad. He retired from Barnett Taxi Service and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Christine Barnett. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, William H. III and Ann S. Barnett, Richard L. and Ruthie T. Barnett, John David Barnett; brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Teddy Barnett, Edward ``Weenie"" and Betty Barnett; sisters, Margaret Preston, Mary Barnett, all of Salem; sisters-in-law, Erika Barnett, Massachusetts, Lucille Barnett, Roanoke; grandchildren, Sherry B. Atkinson and husband, Robert, Allen K. Barnett and wife, Deloris, Paul M. Barnett, Christine B. Johnson and husband, Lee; great-grandchildren, Wendy A. Green, Amber Atkinson, Robin Atkinson, Shannon Barnett, Kent Barnett, Monica Barnett, Kate Barnett; a special friend and companion, Miss Lucy. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. in the East Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Joyce officiating. The family will receive friends at the John M. BOWLES, James Elwood, 66, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996. He was born January 25, 1930, a son of the late Henry C. and Betty Brown Bowles. Mr. Bowles was retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Allen Bowles; and a brother, Floyd L. Bowles. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn S. Bowles of the home; one daughter, Carol Marvin of Salem; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Jackie Bowles of Salem, Larry and Lana Bowles of Vinton, Kelly and Rochelle Bowles of Boones Mill; one sister, Lorene Holcomb of Fayetteville, W.Va.; one half brother, Harold (Toby) Bowles of Ridgeway; grandchildren, Melissa Allred, Jeremy and Megan Bowles, Travis and Kevin Bowles; stepgrandchild, Tina Akers; great-grandchild, Kaelin Allred; and a number of nieces and nephews. CARLAN, Edward Harris, 79, of Salem, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996. He was a resident of the Oaks at Richfield and was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence I. Carlan and Nina Harris Carlan. Surviving relatives include Briscoe Carlan of Bluefield, W.Va., Joe Harris and Virginia Karkman of Mount Airy, N.C., and E.J. Mitchell of Galax. EPPERLY, Virginia Carroll, 77, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 13, 1996. She was born June 20, 1918. She retired as a beautician and had suffered health for more than two years. A daughter of the late John Henry Carroll and Nora Harper Carroll, she was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Carroll Layman. Virginia is survived by her husband, the Rev. J. Burton Epperly; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harley and Dorothy Carroll, Christiansburg, Page and Helen Carroll of Blacksburg, Allen and Doris Carroll of Hot Springs, Ark; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Epperly, Cupertina, Calif; five nieces, four nephews; five grandnieces; and seven grandnephews. A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Mark Christian. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Calvary United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Kelley. The family requests flowers be omitted and memorials made to the Calvary United Methodist Church, Christiansburg, Va. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. FARMER, Kenneth Ervin, (``Skinny''), 87, of Radford, passed away Thursday, March 14, 1996. He was a member of Carter Street United Methodist Church, and was a retired city employee. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Luke (Ruby) Lambert of Bland; and several nieces and nephews. Vaught of Bramwell, W.Va.; two sons, James E. Grubb of Crockett, Jonathan C. Grubb of Florida; brother, William A. Phipps of Wytheville; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. MANLEY, Robert L., (``Nance""), 92 of Big Island, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 1996 in the Bedford County Nursing Home. He was born March 22, 1903 in Bedford County, a son of the late John Eugene Manley and Ida Leftwich Manley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Tooley Manley; four brothers, C. E. (Dick) Manley, Nylen (Dude) Manley, Sidney T. Manley, Trevey Manley; and two sisters, Beulah Reynolds and Margaret Tooley. He was a retired carpenter, was a member of the Big Island Hunt Club and the Hunting Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by three daughters, Ida Jessie M. Smith, Big Island; Thelma M. Petty, Natural Bridge; Patria M. Johnson, Bedford; four sons, Talmadge T. Manley, Thaxton; Earl D. Manley, John R. Manley, both of Bedford; Wesley W. Manley, Big Island; two sisters, Mary Massie. Christine Massie, both of Big Island; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A Graveside service will be conducted Friday, March 15, 1996 at 11 a.m. from the Hunting Creek Baptist Church, by the Rev. Bill Steele.
