R&B Communications of Daleville is jumping into the increasingly crowded pool of area providers of access to the Internet.
The company said it will begin offering local access to the Internet to customers in Roanoke and Botetourt counties around April 1. It will be through a new subsidiary, R&B Internet Services. Most computer users in the Roanoke Valley will be able to connect with the service with a local phone call, the company said.
The company will offer a basic service rate of $9.95 for 10 hours of access to the Internet, a global linkup of computer networks. For $19.95 customers will get unlimited service, the company said.
For those needing a faster connection to the Internet, the company said it will offer a 56 kilobit dedicated connection, the company said.
Research has shown the most common complaint of Internet users is the inability to connect with their service provider because lines are busy, R&B said. "We plan to cure that problem right from the start by employing a generous amount of telecommunications facilities and modems to serving our customers so that access will be much easier and quicker," said Sam Hampton, R&B's director of marketing.
Other Roanoke-area access providers include Infinet, an affiliate of The Roanoke Times; RevNet, a service of Kinetic Data Systems Inc.; Citizens InterNET, a subsidiary of Floyd County's Citizens Telephone Cooperative; and several national companies.
