FIRE SAFETY CLASS FOR PARENTS AND KIDS

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Roanoke Civic Center, families can get instruction in fire safety and maybe a free smoke detector at the kickoff of Children & HealthCare Week by The Medical Center for Children at Community Hospital.

A house fire recently killed five people in Roanoke.

The fire safety course will include interactive displays and demonstrations to help children and parents practice home escape plans. Children will get to visit the firefighters' Fire Safety House, where fires are simulated and participants learn how to react to a blaze.

Smoke detectors will be given away in random drawings.

The event is free. Sponsors are the Roanoke Regional SafeKids Coalition, the Roanoke Fire EMS Department, the Roanoke Firefighters Association and WDBJ-TV. Lowe's of Roanoke has provided the material for the safety demonstrations and the detectors that will be given away.

Children's-week events are scheduled at the hospital through next Saturday. Pet dogs will visit the young patients, and various activities from quilting to T-shirt decorating are scheduled.
