Pulaski business wins state award

PULASKI - Virginia Church Furniture Inc. in Pulaski is the first winner of the Client of the Year Award from the Virginia Department of Economic Development.

The company makes and installs custom church furnishings, and offers lines of chairs, stained-glass windows, lighting, steeples, baptistries and carpeting. In its 13 years Virginia Church Furniture has made pews for more than 1,100 churches, produced chancel furniture for more than 1,000 churches, and added padding to 700 existing pews.

South Carolina offered inducements for the firm to relocate there, but thanks in part to a urban development grant from the town of Pulaski, the company decided to stay, saving 55 local jobs and nearly $2 million in annual contributions to Virginia's economy.

Virginia Church Furniture, which was chosen from 3,920 clients statewide, received the award in part for its close work with the New River Valley Small Business Development Commission, which helped the company find financing that will enable it to expand.

The company "is a perfect example of the type of client that our centers assist on a regular basis," said Robert Smith, director of the state's Business Development Network. "However, Virginia Church Furniture added that most important element to any counseling relationship - determination to succeed."
