RADFORD RIPS TECH 14-7 IN BASEBALL

Radford pounded out 18 hits in their 14-7 college baseball victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday in Radford.

Every Highlander in the lineup got at least one hit. Brian Elms, Mike Lombard and Rob McCandless had three hits each to lead Radford (3-10).

Kelly Dampeer (Northside) hit his third homer of the season for Radford. Radford's 14 runs were all earned. Tim Manwiller picked up the win.

Chad Foutz (Franklin County) and Josh Herman (William Byrd) each had three hits for the Hokies (8-6).

In other college baseball:

* Youngstown State jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first five innings and defeated VMI 10-3 in Lexington.

VMI (4-14) tallied eight hits and two earned runs on the afternoon. Scott Thompkins hit a two-run homer and drove in the another on a ground out in the fifth inning.

* Ferrum had five players with at least two hits as the Panthers defeated Christopher Newport 16-1 in a Dixie Conference game in Ferrum.

David Jones led the charge with four hits. Jimmy Hamilton scattered four hits over seven innings and allowed one run while striking out four and walking none.

* Matt Ermigiotti pitched a complete game as Washington and Lee nipped Virginia Wesleyan 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Marlins (5-6 overall, 1-1) won the first game 6-3.

Ermigiotti struck out seven, allowed no earned runs and walked no one. He also went 2-for-4 to knock in both Generals' runs. The Generals are 5-7, 1-2.

ETC. UVa men's lacrosse rolls 15-9

Virginia's top-ranked men's lacrosse team defeated eleventh-ranked Massachusetts 15-9 in Baltimore.

Doug Knight led the Cavaliers (4-0) with four goals and one assist. Drew Melchionni, Tim Whiteley, Henry Oakey, David Wren and David Curry added two goals each for the Cavaliers.

* VMI scored nine goals in the opening quarter en route to a 21-10 men's lacrosse victory over Marist in Lexington.

Rob Worrell led the Keydets (3-1) with five goals and five assists. Rusty Parrino also scored five goals and added two assists.

* Jason Myers scored three goals and had an assist in Washington and Lee's 12-5 men's lacrosse win over Gettysburg in Lexington.

Russell Croft, Ande Jenkins and Adam Butterworth added two goals each for the Generals (5-1).

* B.J. Forte scored four goals as Radford defeated Holy Cross 10-7 in men's lacrosse at Radford.

The Highlanders scored five goals in the fourth quarter to win the match. Bay Burch added two goals for Radford.

* Junior Lisa Franzino tallied four goals and two assists as Roanoke topped Johns Hopkins University 14-12 in women's lacrosse at Alumni Field, improving the Maroons' record to 2-0.

* Freshman attacker Suzy Funston tallied four goals to lead Virginia Tech to a 20-10 victory over Monmouth in women's lacrosse in Monmouth, N.J.

* Washington and Lee junior goalie Brooke Glenn made 21 saves and freshman Lauren Francid had four goals and three assists, helping the Generals defeat Guilford College 16-6 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game in Lexington.

* Washington and Lee's Rebecca Prince and Hollins' Katina Horton earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III swimming championships in Atlanta.

Prince finished fourth in the 200-meter backstroke with a school-record time of 2 minutes, 7.67 seconds at Emory University's pool. Horton was fifth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.08.

* Roanoke College's Courtney Fitch broke his own meet record with a high jump of 6-feet, 10 1/4 inches in the fifth annual Washington and Lee Track and Field Invitational in Lexington.

Fitch qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with the jump. Fitch was competing in his first meet of the season after finishing the basketball season with the Maroons.

Washington and Lee senior Josephine Schaeffer also qualified for the outdoor championships by winning the women's 10,000-meter run in a meet record time of 36:45.7.

Roanoke's men's team finished tied for 10th with 11 points and the women's team finished 12th with one point. Washington and Lee's men's team finished 12th with eight points and the women's team finished fifth with 58 points.
