VIRGINIA WESTERN FALLS SHORT

Virginia Western's bid for the state title fell short against Thomas Nelson of Hampton 110-108 in the semifinals of the Virginia Community College basketball tournament on Saturday in Hampton.

Vince Bryson scored with six seconds left to break a tie and the Blue Stars were unable to get off a good shot at the buzzer.

Bryson and Spence Askew combined for 17 3-point goals and 62 points, Bryson with 29 and Askew with 33.

Virginia Western (13-6) led by 13 at halftime but could not hold the lead. The Blue Stars were led by Tremayne McHeimer's 39 points. Sam Barrett added 24 points and David Ross 22.

Virginia Western will play for third place against Patrick Henry Community College of Martinsville today at noon.

Thomas Nelson will take on Nelson J. Seargent of Richmond for the championship.
