She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Artiller Witcher of Moneta, Mrs. Susie Bond and Miss Peggy Childress of Hardy; four sons, Willie, Richard and Herman Childress of Hardy and Thomas Childress of Roanoke; one son-in-law, Frank Dent of Hardy; a devoted granddaughter, Miss Tammy Childress of Hardy; 40 additional grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; 40 gr eat-great-grandchildren; cousins; other relatives, and friends. DILLON, Charles Lewis, 77, of Boones Mill, passed away Friday, March 15, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Ilitia Dillon. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Loyell Wincell Jones of Boones Mill; three sons and one d aughter-in-law, Jerry L. and Kathy J. Dillon, Richard W. Dillon all of Boones Mill, Raynard P. Dillon of Rocky Mount; one sister, Ruth Pybass of Roanoke; two brothers, and one sister-in-law, Harry and Grace Dillon of Oakland, Calif., Bill Dillon of Rapid City, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. HANCOCK, Willis, 71, of Raeford, N.C., formerly of New Castle, Va., died Friday, March 15, 1996. Mr. Hancock was born in Va. on February 20, 1925 to the late Herman and Zola Paxton Hancock. He is survived by one son, Frank Hancock of Raeford, N.C.; three daughters, Doris Boahn of Raeford, N.C., Brenda Garafone of Fayetteville, N.C., Carol Carmon of Linden, N.C.; one brother, Clayton Hancock of New Castle, Va.; one sister, Dorothy Hayle of Roanoke, Va.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Boitnott Funeral Home Chapel in New Castle, Va. with interment in Huffman Memorial Park. HICKS, Clarence W., 76, of Boones Mill, passed away Saturday, March 16, 1996, at home. He was born June 23, 1919, son of the late Joseph and Emma Hicks. He was retired from South Roanoke Lumber Company. He was a World War II veteran, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Blanche Hicks of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Faye Hicks, Bassett; daughter, Suzette Mills, Boones Mill; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Denise Hicks, Boones Mill; sister, Lucy Mills, Boones Mill; sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Tommy Snead, Vinton; sister-in-law, Lucille Hicks, Rocky Mount, and five grandchildren, Sabrina Hicks, Jason Hicks, Kerri Mills, Kenny Paul Mills and Allison Hicks. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Monday at Oakey's South Chapel, with Pastors Lee and Robin Naff and Pastor Chris Foster officiating. HUGHES, Jackiey F.K., (``Jack""), 68, of Abingdon, died Friday, March 15, 1996 at his home after a long illness. He was a resident of Bradshaw, W.Va. for over 60 years before moving to Abingdon five years ago. He worked at Island Creek Coal Mines for 30 years and retired as superintendent. He was a member of the American Legion Post #175 of Bradshaw, W.Va., Berwind Lodge #141 AF & AM of Berwind, W.Va., Wyndham Chapter #45, R.A.M. of Welch, W.Va. He was a member of Knights Templar, Welch Commandery #27, Welch, W.Va., a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Beni Kedem Temple of the Shrine, Charleston, W.Va. He was a member of the Pentacostal Holiness Church in Bristol, Va. Surviving include his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Verna Robinette Hughes; one son, Rodney L. Hughes, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; one stepson, Allen D. Robinette, Stephenson, W.Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Lynn Crutchfield, Abingdon, Va., Mrs. Nancy Jarvis, Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, Ernest Cowan Hughes, English, W.Va.; six grandchildren. MASON, Hazel Overstreet, of Roanoke, departed this life Friday, March 15, 1996. She was prec eded in death by her husband, Roy E. Mason. Mrs. Mason loved nature, was an avid gardener and a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Gary Harris of Roanoke, and Betsy and Ray Welch of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandson, Michael Todd Harris of Roanoke; granddaughters, Lisa Welch Cude of Greensboro, N.C., and Diana Lee Welch of High Point, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Emily Paige Cude of Greensboro; sisters, Ruby O. Yates and Myrtle O. Crowder of Roanoke; many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Ralph H. Covington of Roanoke, and special friend, Marie Crawley of Roanoke. McCLAUGHERTY, Anna Gayle, 49, of Radford, passed away Friday, March 15, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. She was a disabled employee of the Radford University Post Office. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Angela Gravley of Parrott and Mrs. Barbara Hayes of Dublin; one sister, Mrs. Winona Hughes of Christiansburg, and three grandchildren. PLYMALE, Irene Corbin, 87, widow of William S. Plymale Jr., died Friday, March 15, 1996. She was retired from the Roanoke City school system, and was a 32-year member of the teaching profession. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are her son, Corbin Lee Plymale of Sturbridge, Mass.; three grandchildren, Scott, Brett and Lynn of Portland, Maine, and one sister, Ethel C. Saunders of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Evergreen Burial Park at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. William B. Ramey Jr. officiating. PORTER, Lena B., 76, of Rincon, Georgia, died Thursday, March 14, 1996 at Hospice Savannah, Georgia, after a long illness. She was a Kentucky native and had been employed at the FBI in Washington, D.C. She had also worked for the David M. Lee Furniture Company in Richmond. She was a U. S. Army, World War II Vetera n and a member of the Salem Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Richard R. Porter, of Rincon; sisters, Eileen Reynolds, Fincastle, Kathleen Hancock, Salem; also eight nieces and nephews. SNOW, Herman Lawrence, 80, of Roanoke, formerly of Charlottesville, died Saturday, March 16, 1996 in South Carolina. Born in Greene County on June 11, 1915, he was the son of the late Newman and Carrie Snow. He was the husband of the late Omie Law son Snow. Mr. Snow retired from Frank Ix & Son in Charlottesville. He was a member of Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren. Survivors include two sons, Samuel L. Snow of Roanoke and Donald O. Snow of Surfside Beach, S.C.; one sister, Leona Lawson of Baltimore, Md.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other family members and friends who will miss him. SOWERS, Herbert E. Sr., 75, of Staunton, died Friday, March 15, 1996 at August Medical Center in Fisherville. A son of the late Ernest and Lola Wills Sowers, he was born December 10, 1920 in Roanoke. Mr. Sowers worked as a manager for Combined Insurance Company. Surviving are seven children, Anthony M. Sowers, John T. Sowers and Richard E. Sowers all of Staunton, Judith S. Stinnett and C. Douglas Sowers Sr. both of Vinton, Herbert E. ``Butch"" Sowers Jr. of Henry, and Debra S. Smith of Roanoke; eight grandsons, Zachary Sowers, Cris Stinnett, Matt Stinnett, Charlie Stinnett, Adam Stinnett, Buddy Smith, Steven Smith, and Craig Sowers; six granddaughters, Angie S. Ellis, Courtney Sowers, Holly Alls, Megan Sowers, Summer Sowers and Amanda Sowers; three great-granddaughters, Amanda Ellis, Stephanie Ellis and Shayna Alls. He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Peters Sowers on May 9, 1988 and a brother, W. Frank Sowers. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Hamrick Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. A. SUTTON, Frances Simmons, 68, of Prairie Village, Kansas, formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away Saturday, March 16, 1996. She was preceded in death by her father, Hampton R. Simmons of Roanoke. Survivors include her husband, Carol L. Sutton, Prairie Village, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Larry Sears of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren; her mother, Julia Simmons of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Nadine and William Grant of Roanoke. VEST, Truman, 83, of Check, passed away Friday, March 15, 1996, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville. He was born April 15, 1912, in Floyd County, and was retired from Hercules. Mr. Vest was preceded in death by his wife, Dormal King Vest. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Jerry Link of Salem; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Judy Vest, and Michael and Evelyn Vest of Check; a very special friend, Pauline Lawrence of Christiansburg; three sisters, Bonnie Willis of Christiansburg, Ruby Foster of Shawsville and Iva Sowder of Check; two brothers, Hampton Vest of Check and Gratton Vest of Salem; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
