Teens perform in spring ballet recital

ROANOKE - Three New River Valley teens will perform in a spring ballet recital at Patrick Henry High School in March.

The dancers, members of the Southwest Virginia Ballet, include Michelle Lookadoo, 16, of Radford, Desiree Reese, 16, of Christiansburg, and Marjie Rose, 17, of Blacksburg.

The performance will take place at Patrick Henry's Clara Black Auditorium and will feature "Concerto," a ballet created for the company by guest choreographer Juan Valqui.

The company also will premiere a new ballet by Terri Post entitled "Sandprints."

The performances will be held Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Ticket prices are $6.50 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and children 12 and under. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.

Sierra Club to examine Price Mountain

BLACKSBURG - The Sierra Club will meet on Thursday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m., at the Museum of Natural History, Blacksburg. Joe Powers, Montgomery County Planning Director and Jeff Scott, Zoning Administrator, will present an overview of William Price's request to rezone 538 acres on Price Mountain from agricultural to residential for high-density housing. They will discuss the type of development possible under the current zoning and what could happen if the area were rezoned as residential.

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on this request on Monday 7 p.m., at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Residents are urged to attend the hearing and bring questions to the March 28 Sierra Club meeting.

Giles County seeks foster parents

GILES - The Giles Department of Social Services is seeking persons interested in becoming foster parents for children in the county of Giles.

Boucher to speak at party dinner

CHRISTIANSBURG - Congressman Rick Boucher will speak at the Montgomery County Democratic Party dinner on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Christiansburg Middle School.

Madison Marye and Jim Schuler will report on the recent General Assembly session.

Leslie Byrne, candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate will speak. Mark Warner, also a candidate for the Senate will be represented by his political director, Jeff Mitchell. Both candidates are seeking delegates from Montgomery County who will vote for them at the Democratic State Convention.

Information will be available on how to be a candidate for a delegate and on the April 13 delegate selection caucus at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Delegates will be selected at to attend the 9th District Convention on May 11 and the State Convention on June 7 and 8.

'The Long Way Home' tryouts are March 30

RADFORD - Tryouts for "The Long Way Home" will be held on Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m. at Radford University's Porterfield Studio Theater.

There are 12 speaking parts for men, 7 for women, 2 for children. Extras are also needed. People are needed to work in concession, gift shop and ticket sales. Ushers, stage and technical crew will also be interviewed at the tryouts.

Interpreters are needed for the cabin and grave sites at the theater and an interpreter is needed for walking tours to Ingles Ferry Landing. People applying for these positions should be familiar with the Mary Ingles story and area history so that they can answer visitor's questions.
