Construction of the new U.S. Postal Service building in this Giles County village began Monday.
Jack Anderson, building superintendent for Michigan post office contractor David Rice, said the new building will be completed in three months.
Earth movers, backhoes and other equipment began clearing the building site at U.S. 460 and Virginia 42.
The new building, on property adjacent to a small grocery store, will replace the current post office trailer on Virginia 42, a half-mile east in the heart of the village. The Newport post office hasn't been in a permanent structure in 15 years.
The new post office will be a 2,500-square-foot structure and will include ample parking.
Anderson will supervise construction and work by subcontractors hired by Rice, said David Godfrey, postmaster.
