NAMES ON CAMPUS

Simone M. Gabriel of Radford is recipient of a Student Support Services Scholarship at New River Community College for the 1996 spring semester. Gabriel is majoring in police science and expects to graduate May 1997. She is a member of the NRCC host club, the Ambassadors.

A Blacksburg student has been selected to receive an Atlantic Mutual Scholarship from Virginia Western Community College.

Debra Nelson is a student in the computer information systems program at the college. She was awarded a $500 scholarship, which recognizes students who have demonstrated talents in a business or computer-related field.

Two area residents received their bachelor's degrees from Radford University at the end of the winter semester.

Susan E. Creasey of Shawsville, received a degree in music. She is the daughter of Russell Creasey.

John A. Kirk, also of Shawsville, received a degree in interdisciplinary studies. He is the son of John and Jean Kirk.

Christopher D. Stoeckle started his first semester at Middlebury College in Vermont this spring. He is one of 95 students entering at the start of the spring term. He is among 680 other first-year students at the liberal-arts college. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. David Stoeckle of Blacksburg.

Three area professors are among 11 professors statewide to win an Outstanding Faculty Award, the state's highest honor for teaching faculty at Virginia's colleges and universities. They are:

Franklin Jones, a physical science professor at Radford University. Jones also is a recent recipient of Radford University's Dedmond Professorial Award for Teaching Excellence.

Donald Linzey, a biology professor at Wytheville Community College.

James Martin, an associate professor of civil engineering at Virginia Tech.

In it's tenth year, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia recently announced the winners. Award winners were selected from a pool of 86 candidates nominated from 36 institutions statewide and were chosen by a 14-member panel. Each winner receives a $5,000 prize and a commemorative crystal sculpture.
