1 ARRESTED IN ROBBERIES

A 21-year-old man is the suspect in two armed robberies of Northwest Roanoke convenience stores over the weekend. No one was injured in either incident.

Officers arrested Christopher Shawn Claxton early Saturday and charged him with robbing the Uni-Mart at 3842 Shenandoah Ave. N.W. Claxton was apprehended in a nearby cemetery, police said.

Monday, investigators charged Claxton with robbing the Village Store at 4509 Salem Turnpike N.W. late Friday. Claxton, of the 3400 block of Bennett Drive Northwest, remained in Roanoke City Jail.

Police gave this account of what happened:

At 9:10 p.m. Friday, a man walked into the Village Store and asked for change. When the clerk opened the register, the man pulled a knife, told the clerk to get back, and grabbed cash from the register. The robber fled the store on foot. Police said the clerk told them the robber had been in the store before.

At 12:44 a.m. Saturday, a man walked into the Uni-Mart and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash register, the man reached across the counter and displayed a knife.

The robber grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled on foot.
