Police in Irving, Texas, are investigating a case in which Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin and former Cowboy Alfredo Roberts were at a motel when a woman was arrested on drug possession charges, KKDA-AM reported Tuesday.
Police Lt. Jimmy Perdue said Tuesday that officers were called to a Residence Inn on March 4 after motel employee Mike Bailey complained about suspected drug use in one of the rooms.
Bailey was not available at his office Tuesday and did not return a telephone call to his home.
Police who responded to the call smelled marijuana and confiscated four baggies of the drug, Perdue said. They also seized three packages of cocaine and other drug paraphernalia, according to the police report.
Officers found four people in the room and arrested one, 22-year-old Angela Beck, a self-employed model, Perdue said.
A police source familiar with the investigation told KKDA that Irvin and Roberts were among those in the room.
Irving police refused to release the names of the room's other occupants, saying they were witnesses and had not been charged with wrongdoing.
Former Florida State and NFL running back Sammie Smith pleaded guilty to two federal charges of possession and distribution of cocaine and faces a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison. Smith, 29, arrested in Orlando, Fla., in September after a five-month undercover investigation, could be sentenced to life and fined $4 million, said U.S. Attorney Charles R. Wilson. Sentencing is set for June 24.
Flyers at center of wheeling, dealing
The Philadelphia Flyers, in a flurry of moves the day before the NHL's trade deadline, acquired two veteran players and a prospect in deals with Anaheim, Los Angeles and Ottawa.
The Flyers traded center Anatoli Semenov and the rights to defenseman Mike Crowley to the Mighty Ducks for 18-year-old right wing Brian Wesenberg. They also obtained right wing John Druce and a seventh-round draft pick in 1997 from the Los Angeles Kings for a fourth-round pick in 1996. In their third trade of the day, the Flyers acquired Kerry Huffman, a defenseman who was with the team from 1986-92, from Ottawa for future considerations.
Meanwhile, the St.Louis Blues landed another former teammate of Wayne Gretzky's from his championship days in Edmonton, acquiring defenseman Charlie Huddy from the Buffalo Sabres along with a 1996 seventh-round choice for the rights to left wing Denis Hamel.
While the Flyers were wheeling and dealing, they were dealt - or at least sold.
Philadelphia's NHL and NBA teams got new owners in a deal that includes two major arenas and removes unpopular 76ers owner Harold Katz. Cable television giant Comcast Corp. agreed to team with Flyers owner Ed Snider in a sale that creates a new company that will own the Flyers, the 76ers, the teams' current arena and the one they will move into next season. Financial terms were not announced.
Another construction mishap at an Olympic venue in Atlanta, this time the aquatics center, halted work in the area while officials tried to determine why two steel girders collapsed. No one was injured Monday night when the girders fell inside the swimming and diving venue at Georgia Tech. The accident is being investigated.
Three Arizona State basketball players won't face criminal charges in the alleged sexual and physical assault of a female student and another woman, authorities in Tempe, Ariz., announced. Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley said a review by his office showed there was little chance any of the three freshmen - Tommie Prince, Rico Harris and George Gervin - would be convicted if charges were brought.
