An 81-year-old Wytheville man died after an accident Monday involving a car in which he was a passenger. Authorities are uncertain whether he died from injuries or a heart attack after the collision.
James Richard Rowe Jr. was in the front seat of a car driven by his daughter, Carolyn McHone, 48, of Kernersville, N.C., when the accident happened about 2:30 p.m. McHone had several broken bones and cuts, and her mother, Marianne Gale Rowe, had a broken leg.
McHone's car collided with a car driven by 18-year-old Curtis Ray Witt of Bluefield, W.Va., on a curve on the frontage road west of state police 4th Division headquarters east of Wytheville. Witt was treated at Wythe County Community Hospital and released.
Trooper Joe Thomas said the Witt car was in McHone's lane when it rounded the curve. An autopsy is to be conducted to find the cause of Rowe's death.
